Is disability architecture’s final taboo?
 
Although one in five working-age adults in the UK are classed as disabled, according to charity Scope, latest figures suggest a significantly lower proportion for those working in architecture.  Fewer than 1 per cent of respondents to a survey by the Architects’ Registration Board this August described themselves as having a disability.  The AJ spoke to four people at different stages of their architectural careers about their experiences studying and working with a disability. The HoME coalition is calling for urgent action to tackle the UK’s shortage of accessible homes

The coalition of charities and housing organisations is urging the public to back their proposal for better homes. The government is now consulting on its long-awaited proposals to raise standards, so that all new homes are built to better meet the needs of current and future generations of older and disabled people. NRAC Virtual Conference 2020
 
The NRAC Virtual Conference will be on Thursday 3rd December 2020, from 9:30am.  Speakers include Chris Fry of Fry Law, with his annual update of cases brought to court under the Equality Act 2010. Dr Karen Boyce, a Senior Lecturer and a member of the Fire Safety Engineering Research and Technology research centre at Ulster University. Also speaking is Neil Smith, Inclusive Design Lead for HS2, one of the Mayor of London's Design Advocates and Chair of the London Legacy Development Corporation's Built Environment Access Panel. The future is only bright if it’s inclusive
 
In the not-too-distant future, I want to get to a place where I don’t have to scope out where I’m going to ensure my mum will be able to join me in the venue. I don’t want to have to check whether a restaurant has disabled access or ground-floor facilities. It should be a given. [Read more]
