2020 Oat Variety Trials

Practical Farmers of Iowa has released their cooperator trial data for the 2020 Oat Variety Trials.

Yellow Book

No, this is not the yellow pages, this is the 2020 Report of Insecticide Evaluation for Soybean Aphids, Japanese Beetle and Soybean Gall Midge. And, you can find previous reports for the same insects by going to the ISU Extension and Outreach Store and typing "Yellow Book" in the search function.

Soybean Cyst Nematode Management and Resistance

Soybean varieties with soybean cyst nematode (SCN) resistance from the breeding line PI 88788 are common, and nearly continuous use of this resistance source has led to SCN populations that are capable of increased reproduction on these varieties thereby reducing the effectiveness of those lines.  Other sources of SCN resistance are now available. This discussion is highlighted in an Integrated Crop Management article written by Greg Tylka, Soybean varieties with SCN resistance other than PI 88788.

Soybean Foliar Fungicide Evaluation

Daren Mueller has published the Statewide soybean foliar fungicide evaluation in 2020 report. While 2020 was a dry year in most locations and disease issues were not much of a problem, Daren reminds us that not only is yield important, but you must consider the economic returns from any fungicide application. Additional resources include the Fungicide Efficacy for Control of Soybean Foliar Diseases table published by the Crop Protection Network

Iowa Private Pesticide Applicator Meetings

Let me thank you all for your patience as we adapt to changing circumstances with COVID-19 in regards to delivery of private pesticide applicator training. Your well being is my utmost concern.  While I have cancelled all of my December meetings, I want you to know that County Extension Staff, Extension Field Agronomists and campus staff are working hard to provide training in a safe environment.  After the first of the year I anticipate there will be multiple delivery methods for your private pesticide applicator training.  You can most certainly contact your local County Extension Office to determine their availability to schedule time for you to watch a video prior to the end of this year, or I ask that you wait for us to share details about more opportunities after the first of the year. You are welcome to call me at 515-231-2830 if you have questions or concerns- Angie.
