Nanopore Grants Round 2!

Get started, or get deeper into long-read sequencing technology with our next round of nanopore sequencing grants.  The CTBMB would like to further encourage adoption of this technology and has several full-size and mini-size (Flongle) flow-cells to give away.

Grant applications are no more than 1 page and are due on 4th December 2020.

See https://www.jcu.edu.au/ctbmb/grants for full details.

Virtual Bioinformatics Conferences in November and December

There are two new exciting Australian-based virtual bioinformatics conferences taking place over the next few weeks. Both represent a great way to meet fellow bioinformaticians and to learn what is happening in bioinformatics around the country.

On Nov 24th to 26th we have the Australian Bioinformatics and Computational Biology Society (ABACBS) 2020 conference featuring both international and national keynote speakers as well as amazing local talent.

See https://www.abacbs.org/conference2020 for details.

Then on Nov 30th to Dec 3rd we have Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute (AMSI) BioInfoSummer 2020.  Themes include single cell, transcriptomics, RNA biology, and long read sequencing.

See https://bis.amsi.org.au/ for details.
T-shirts

We still have a large stock of T-shirts available to give away to CTBMB members.  This includes the 2018 polo style shirt and the 2019 cotton T-shirt.

If you'd like a shirt contact Ira (ira.cooke@jcu.edu.au) if you are in Townsville, or Matt (matt.field@jcu.edu.au) if you are in Cairns.
R Communities in Cairns and Townsville

Cairns: Experienced and aspiring R users are very welcome. We meet on Mondays at 12 via Zoom .  Please contact Martha Cooper (martha.cooper@my.jcu.edu.au) or Olivia Rowley (olivia.rowley@jcu.edu.au) for more information

Townsville: Townsville’s R community started in 2019 inspired by the group in Cairns.  We meet Mondays at 11 on Zoom.  New members are encouraged to join the slack channel for updates (https://coder-tsv.slack.com/), follow the group on twitter (https://twitter.com/codertsv) and check the group website https://codertsv.github.io/ for access to past presentations.  If you’d prefer not to use Slack please contact Natalia Andrade Rodriguez (natalia.andraderodriguez@my.jcu.edu.au) or Jia Zhang (jia.zhang2@my.jcu.edu.au) and ask to be added to the email list.
Journal Club

Journal Club is an informal discussion of current papers on population genetics, genomics, microbiome, proteomics, eDNA and anything else related to DNA and its applications!

Every second week a person selects a paper (preferably recently published) that would like to discuss and emails it to the group so the rest have time to read it before JC. That person would start introducing the methods and results of the paper and then we all discuss the strengths and weaknesses of the study. It is a great opportunity to talk about new ideas and/or methods and how we could incorporate them into our own research in a friendly, “no pressure” environment.

The current Journal Club convenor is Cecilia Villacorta-Rath.  If you would like to join please send her an email on cecilia.villacortarath@jcu.edu.au .  This will ensure that you receive Journal Club emails

Come join us every second Friday of the month on zoom.  To receive emails with fortnightly zoom links please sign up to the mailing list.
