GCCN and Galway City Partnership Win Funding for Work on Human Rights and Equality
Galway Advertiser Article

GCCN is delighted to have been recently featured in the Galway Advertiser, together with the partner organisation Galway City Partnership for winning necessary funding support for their new work on human rights and equality.

GCCN was one of the 42 organisations awarded by the Irish Human Rights & Equality Commission under the Human Rights and Equality Grants Scheme 2020 with the project: "Building Collective Capacity and Engagement of Rights-Holders in Galway City"

The Galway Advertiser article states:

Galway City Community Network and Galway City Partnership will develop a civil society panel in Galway city.

Now in its fifth year, the Human Rights and Equality Grants Scheme awards small grants of up to €6,000 and general grants of up to €20,000 to support civil society organisations, rights-holder and community led groups, and trade unions in Ireland promote access to justice for people who face the greatest barriers to accessing their rights.

Ann Irwin, Galway City Community Network co-ordinator, says they are leading the third initiative to embed equality and human rights in Galway city, with partners Galway City Partnership and Galway City Community Development Committee.

"We look forward to building the capacity of those protected under the equality and human rights legislation, to engage with and use the Public Sector Duty as a mechanism to achieve equality.”

The Commission welcomed 138 applications to the grant scheme from across the country. Since its establishment in 2016, the Commission’s grant scheme has supported 150 human rights and equality projects across Ireland including research programmes, training or resource activities, conferences or events and cultural initiatives.

Pandemic Project “Dear Galway…”
Galway City Museum

Galway City Museum is inviting the people of Galway to write a letter to future generations of Galwegians.  The museum is asking the public to share their lived experiences of dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic and to offer advice to future generations on how to cope during a global crisis.
Letter writers may wish to address some of the following questions.

  • How did you feel when you first found out about the COVID-19 pandemic?
  • How did the pandemic affect your family, social, work, college or school life?
  • What issues have most concerned you about the pandemic?
  • How have you marked any big events or occasions during this time?
  • How have you been passing your free time at home during the pandemic?
  • Given the restrictions on face to face meetings, how have you been staying in contact with friends and loved ones?
  • Have you acquired any new skills or hobbies during this time?
  • Have you or anybody you know become sick during the COVID-19 outbreak? What has been your experience in responding to this sickness?
  • In what ways do you think that COVID-19 is affecting people’s wellbeing, physical or mental?
  • What has been the most challenging aspect of the COVID-19 pandemic?
  • Has anything positive come out of the situation?
  • What have you learned from the experience that may be of value to future generations?

These questions are only a guide but participants are also welcome to write about their own unique experience freestyle. We are in this together but our individual experiences differ and that is what the museum is looking to record and reflect.

Additional material can be submitted including photos, newspaper clippings, drawings, etc. There is no ‘right’ or ‘wrong’ way to write the letter, participants can write as little or as much as they want and they are reminded not to worry about spelling or handwriting.

Participants can submit their letters by post or by email up until and including Monday 1st February 2021.

Handwritten or typed letters can be sent via post to “Dear Galway” Project, Galway City Museum, Spanish Parade, Galway, H91 CX5P or scanned or typed letters can be emailed directly to museum@galwaycity.ie .
Please title your letter “Dear Galway”.

This project is open to all age groups and all letters will form part of a digital archive to be made available for research purposes. A selection of the material submitted will also feature on the museum website and social media channels.

Galway City Museum look forward to hearing how the people of Galway have experienced and are experiencing this new era of Covid-19.

This initiative has been supported by Creative Ireland through Galway City Council.
Galway City Museum remains closed to the public in line with Level 5 government guidelines regarding Covid-19. Visitors are still welcome to explore the museum virtually at www.galwaycitymuseum.ie and to follow museum social media channels for updates.

Does your organisation have Irish speakers?
Galway Volunteer Initiative
From time to time Galway Volunteer get contacted by Nuacht RTE, TG4 or Radio na Gaeltachta looking for people who speak Irish to come on their shows to talk about issues related to the community. These are often pre-recorded but can also be live depending on the show the journalist is working for.

Hence, Galway Volunteer are looking to identify groups that might be able to provide able Irish speakers - this would mean your group's issues could get highlighted on national media.
If you have someone who could potentially do this please complete the following very short survey
Galway Volunteer are not looking for the Irish speakers contact details, but just need to find out which organisations they can quickly contact if needed.

Think Before You Flush!
World Toilet Day: 19th November

Clean Coasts and Irish Water are asking you to Think Before You Flush on World Toilet Day.

Think before you flush. About 75 percent of blockages are caused by inappropriate items such as wipes and sanitary products being flushed down the toilet. As a result of COVID-19, people are using more wipes than ever to keep hands and surfaces clean. While it is critical that we follow the HSE guidance on hand-washing and coughing etiquette, it is important that we dispose of items like wipes correctly.

World Toilet Day is celebrated on 19th November every year and it seeks to inspire action to tackle the global sanitation crisis and help achieve Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6), which promises sanitation for all by 2030.

Deliberative Democracy and the Development of
Public Participation Networks
Podcast | 50.SJI Ten Minute Lessons Ep11

Deliberative democracy goes beyond mere representation to give a voice to all citizens in the decision-making process. The development of Public Participation Networks (PPNs) in 2014 provided a mechanism for community groups to have their say in local government decision-making. With over 15,000 member organisations, PPNs are going from strength to strength. This Ten Minute Lesson takes a quick look at the pathway to the development of the PPNs.

Listen to it on iTunes, Spotify, Podcast Republic or wherever you get your podcasts. You can also download this episode straight from the Social Justice Ireland website.

Charity SORP Review Launched
Survey open until December 7th

The Charities SORP is a Statement of Recommended Practice which sets out how charities should prepare their annual accounts and report on their finances. •    Awareness of the SORP;
•    How, if at all, they engage with the development of their charity’s annual report and accounts;
•    What help trustees need to help prepare their annual report and accounts; and
•    What aspects of the charity annual report and accounts are unhelpful or otherwise unnecessary.

COVID-19 Related Updates

Message from
Covid-19 Stakeholder Communications Support

Thursday 12 November

Dear Colleague,

We hope this message finds you well.
We are grateful for your continuing support in helping to share information about COVID-19. Below are a few communications updates for you.

Public Health Measures
Ireland is now at Level 5. You can see all of the measures that are in place at Level 5 here.

Healthy Ireland Resilience and Wellbeing ‘Keep Well’ Campaign
We are pleased to share the next phase of the Healthy Ireland Resilience and Wellbeing campaign will go live on Monday 16th November with a national and local advertising campaign.
The Government Plan for Living with COVID-19 - Resilience and Recovery 2020-2021 highlights the important role that individual and community resilience will play in contributing to our ongoing response to COVID-19. The “Keep Well” campaign will signpost to people of all ages about minding their own physical and mental health and wellbeing by adding healthy and helpful habits to their daily and weekly routines. The Healthy Ireland “Keep Well” campaign will provide guidelines, information, and tips on things to help all to keep well through the coming months. This Resilience and Wellbeing information is being added on an ongoing basis on www.gov.ie/healthyireland and under the following sections: Staying Active, Keeping Connected, Switching Off, Eating Well, and Minding Your Mood.
A number of Sláintecare funded initiatives will be delivered through the Healthy Ireland Fund and rolled out over the coming months. A suite of creative assets are available to share with you if you have use for them. Follow on support on social is always welcome.  #keepwell

Invitation to International Men's Day Webinar: Men's Mental Health in these Challenging Times
An invitation to attend an upcoming webinar on International Men’s Day the 19th November focussed on Men’s Mental Health in these Challenging Times in partnership with the Men’s Health Forum in Ireland and the Centre for Men’s Health in IT Carlow. It will highlight recent research and promote important messages for men in relation to their mental health. There will be an exciting line up of speakers on men’s health including inputs on farmers, men who attend men’s sheds and young men as well as a discussion panel with representatives from the GAA, SpunOut, Mental Health Ireland, Healthy Ireland in the Department of Health and the HSE. Please see the link here for registration.

New COVID-19 Campaign
The HSE Bubbles campaign and the Irish language version of the ad are live. The idea of the Bubble is to create a visual reminder for the protection we share when we follow public health actions, and how easily it can be lost.

Flu Vaccine Animations
The following animations about the flu vaccine have been developed by the HSE for people in the Traveller and Roma communities with support from the Wexford Roma Health Advocacy Project, the Intercultural Health Hub in Waterford and the HSE Traveller Health Office in the South East.

CPR Training
Due to COVID-19, the Irish Heart Foundation had to cancel its free CPR training programme in communities nationwide, but CPR is still a very important skill. Around 70% of cardiac arrests happen at home, in front of a loved one and performing CPR can double, if not triple, the person's chance of survival. The good news is that performing CPR is relatively simple and the Irish Heart Foundation has developed a new campaign 'The Hard and Fast Rule' to help everyone learn the two key steps in CPR. Take one minute to view this important video that’s available on their website.

New COVID-19 Testing, Self-Isolation and Restricted Movements Ad
This new ad explains that COVID-19 wants to spread from person to person, but there’s a lot you can do to stop it reaching someone near you or dear to you. It’s important to know when you should self-isolate and when you should restrict your movements. You can watch the ad here. It’s currently live on TV, radio, digital and social media.

Living with COVID-19 Ad
The Living with COVID-19 ad focuses on protective measures and is currently on TV, radio, digital and social media. The newly updated version of this ad is available here.

Partnering with the HSE’s Dementia campaign, Tipperary County Council is embarking on the journey of making Tipperary towns inclusive. The first step is dementia awareness training and you are invited to attend this programme which will take place online on The Alzheimer Society of Ireland’s Moodle Workplace site. We are focusing on the Thurles, Templemore, Roscrea area first and will then roll it out across other towns. The course will begin with an Introductory Video Meeting on Monday 16th November 2020. The map is publicly available and can be used as a useful information resource both for individuals made vulnerable by COVID-19 and by organisations or agencies that need to know where they may refer their clients to for support.

The map is online at the following links:
Further details are available on the GCCN Website.
