Remarkably Successful Civitas Model UN last Saturday

The first High School Model UN session this past Saturday, facilitated via ZOOM, was a great success! Despite no donuts and no opportunities to mingle with one another, there were a few advantages of a virtual MUN. For one, we finished discussing and voting on nine resolutions, several more than usual, including a wide variety of topics such as the condemnation of the USA recognizing Jerusalem as the capital of Israel and questionable police conduct in several countries of the world. The convenience of Zoom Breakout Groups made it possible to have separate committees, providing more opportunity for participants to speak. Several evaluation comments expressed appreciation for the “laid back,” “carefree” approach of a Model UN that stresses dialogue over competition, an atmosphere that was still conveyed in the new necessary, remote format. We all look forward to sharing Model UN in person again someday, although a Zoom session might still be an additional option in the future.

If you attended Saturday’s session and did not get a chance to complete the evaluation, click here to access it.

And now, for the December 5 Model U.N.

Checklist to prepare:
  • The next Model UN session is Saturday, December 5. Remember that every individual delegate from your school must sign-up, even if sharing a country with someone else.  Click here to do that ASAP.
  • Resolutions for December 5 are due by midnight on Tuesday, December 1. They will be posted on our website for you to review as soon as we receive them.
  • Click here for helpful advice on writing a resolution.
  • Continue paying attention to current events happening in your country, especially related to a resolution topic.
  • Send resolutions to gavinstephanie89@gmail.com. You can also email Stephanie with any questions and/or to schedule a help or practice session with your group.
  • If you are interested in participating on December 5 and you are not with a school group, let us know. We can help you select a country.

Community Activist and State Rep. Rasheen Aldridge to Speak with Civitas students on Saturday, Dec. 12

Politics can come and go, but the individuals who make public service an honor and important to all of us are fixtures on our radar. Rasheen Aldridge has been interested in politics since he was in high school, and since then he has been a community activist and vocal speaker for the rights of those who are underserved. For the past six years, he has been a regular insight-giver to Civitas students.

His resume includes being a member of the Ferguson Commission, meeting with President Barack Obama, and now serving in the Missouri General Assembly.

He is conversant on many topics, including the very strained relations between certain police departments and individual officers with minority citizens.

He will be our guest on Saturday, December 12, 2020 from 11:00 AM - 12:00 Noon.

Call for Environmental Action from Civitas Student

My name is Alexandra Hagemeister and I am the founder of I Vote For Mother Earth. I started I Vote For Mother Earth because I wanted to learn about climate change and other environmental issues through facts, and to teach others about how dire it is to support our planet.

Through this platform, I aspire to educate people about the effects of climate change and how it is already affecting us. Though living a green lifestyle is a great step to take if you are worried about climate change, these actions will only take us so far. The biggest action that anyone and everyone can take is to keep the environment in mind when voting for certain candidates; whether it be as a mayor, a state representative, a senator, or even the president.

Even though the election is over, I Vote For Mother Earth still plans on making St. Louis a better place by working with other environmental organizations like the Missouri Coalition for the Environment to protect our floodplains, and to make St. Louis City and St. Louis County a better and cleaner place for everyone living there. Through working with the Greater Good Initiative, we have the opportunity to make a difference through policy proposals.

With your help, there is no doubt that we can make a difference in our community.

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at ivoteformotherearth@gmail.com.
