Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.

2021 Pledge Drive Message

November 18,2020

Dear Westport Presbyterian friends and friends of friends,

At Westport Presbyterian Church—here in the heart of Kansas City—we believe that Jesus calls us to:

          Love with abandon!
          Stand up for justice!
          Be healed ourselves!

We have recovered from two fires. Now we are on fire!

Our mission since 1835 in Westport is the same:

          Create compassionate community!
          Make Space for God’s grace!
Nurture relationships which create local and global neighbors!

We are reaching out to you now to give you an opportunity to support this unique faith adventure! Think of all the important things you do with your money: Provide a home for you and your loved ones. Transportation. Food. Education. Clothing. Health care. Child care. Recreation. And more.

We want to give you an opportunity to help God in what God is doing in and beyond this exciting, challenging, urban, diverse, growing community of Westport.

  • Creative Live Stream Worship Services in which spirituality and the arts, are merged to engage people with each other and in Jesus Christ’s way of leading people into a lifelong adventure with the Living God.
  • Shower Ministry which provides showers, clothes washing, abundant food, conversation and friendship to people who do not have homes. We are currently serving 30-35 people in this great work every Sunday, plus an added 60-75 with nutritious lunches during the week. Everybody gets their temperature taken, which is a relief for many, and new clothes have helped some in interviews that led to jobs.
  • Home for community creating and life changing activities such as: Men’s AA group, Women’s AA group, Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Tai Chi, and the Westport Center for the Arts—all creatively managing to function safely during the Covid-19 pandemic.
  • Home for the Willow Woods Child Development Center, which has provided nurturing state licensed child care and development for forty years. Willow Woods emphasizes nurturing relationships between children and children and caring adults.
  • Prayer Chain!  “Lead me beside still, healing waters.” “God, grant me faith in Your power to heal.”  “Be with the doctors and nurses….”
  • Many Westport members joining in racial justice, social justice and climate change work by partnering with Cherith Brook House of Hospitality, Southern Christian Leadership Conference (March on Kansas City), Stand Up KC (struggle for $15 minimum wage and a union), The New Poor People’s Campaign, the Presbyterian Urban and Immigrant Ministry Network and Presbyterian Earth Keepers.
  • Advocacy and welcoming of LGBTQ persons.
  • Emergency grants for people whose jobs have been negatively impacted by the pandemic. We have given away $7,000 in emergency grants so far.
  • Support for community building and community service through Shepherd Center Central, Midtown KC, Heart of Westport Neighborhood Association.

“What you give—you have!” (war veteran)

“Where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” (Jesus)
