MBYC Junior Commodore's Regatta Report
From a Sailor and Coach's Perspective!

By Jr Laser Fleet Captain and MBYC Coach, Garrett Henderson

Over the last two weekends I was fortunate enough to both sail and coach the annual Jr. Commodore’s regatta here at MBYC. The first weekend had a small storm roll in, so Sabots were cancelled and moved to the next weekend. There were 24 radials and 12 4.7’s that competed. This proved to be a good decision as winds were consistently above 15 knots with squalls gusting upwards of 25. This was some of the most wind I have sailed in, and keeping the boat flat was a struggle. There was hardly anyone who didn’t end up flipped and swimming around the boat. Even if that wasn’t the case the rain showers and spray ended up soaking all of us anyway. Race committee was kind enough to send us on a reach course, resulting in some of the fastest, wettest and most fun course legs you can have. Overall, despite ending the weekend completely sore, wet and tired, I don't think anyone was disappointed. The beginning of winter certainly did not let us down.
The second weekend of the regatta was the rescheduled date for the Sabot fleet. The conditions were much more favorable for them than last weekend. Wind was about 8-10 knots both days with near perfect weather. The wind direction was far more northern than usual wrestling in an interesting course layout Sunday. I worked with the C3 fleet both Saturday and Sunday. There were 24 boats registered with a whopping 16 of them being from MBYC. The kids all sailed well and had a great time. It was so cool to see the younger juniors out sailing and remembering when I was in their place a few years ago. Overall, the regatta was a success for MBYC sailors and I’m sure I speak for everyone when I say that I am looking forward to this regatta again next year!

Congratulations to MBYC's Marleigh Henehan on winning the 2020 Hartley Award: SDAYC Junior Yachtsman of the Year!!

Marleigh was nominated by the MBYC Board of Directors and followed up with an application and interview with the SDAYC Hartley Award Committee who then voted after hearing from all the area club nominees.
These days Marleigh can be found crewing on her family's keel boat or racing Stars with her super crew dad! She also coaches at MBYC. Marleigh hopes to study naval architecture and marine engineering when she heads off to college next year. Great job Marleigh!
