Let's

Talk

Turkey!
November 2020 Newsletter
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, so Let's Talk Turkey!  (def: discuss something frankly and straightforwardly.)  Sure, most would write-up 2020 as a huge turkey (def: something extremely unsuccessful; dud; loser; flop).  At CCCRA, we'd rather associate turkey with giving thanks.  Here are just a few things we're thankful for...
For our generous Donors
For our faithful Members
For our tireless Volunteers
For our new Board Member Nicole Fox Hedden
For those who voted virtually at our 2020 Annual Meeting
For those who gave to the candy fund for Trunk-or-Treat
CCCRA President's Award Winner

Thankful for outgoing director Ron Guggisberg, and for his longtime, and ongoing, devotion to our Trails and Greenways program.

Ron was recently awarded the CCCRA President's Award.  A bench on the Quanassee Path was named in his honor.

RON GUGGISBERG
IN APPRECIATION FOR DEDICATED SERVICE TO THE MISSION OF CCCRA
BOARD MEMBER 2004-2020
The Beal Center

New Hours:  Open Tuesday - Saturday 10am-4pm.

Thankful for the Beal Center Executive Director Kirsten Gleaves, who throughout this difficult year, has creatively found ways to "pay the light bill" despite events banned due to the pandemic.  One such idea?  Selling Holiday Centerpieces.  Order yours today and pickup at the Beal Center starting Friday, 11/27.  $35.  Call (828) 415-1623 for more information.

Thankful for the elves who are busy decking out the Beal Center for socially-distanced tours this holiday season.  Don't miss the gift shop, fully stocked with holiday present ideas.  Find something special for your special someone.
Thankful for the new Red Maple planted at the Historic Courthouse Beal Center.  Thankful for the donation from  Historic Hayesville Inc.  that made it possible. Thankful for the unloading and planting services of Ron Salzer , and for John Strawn of Hanging Dog Valley Nursery, who supplied and planted the tree which will shade generations of visitors to come.
Cherokee Culture

We're thankful for those committed to preserving Clay County's Cherokee heritage, especially Western Carolina University's Dr. Jane Eastman who is researching a Quanassee/Spikebuck artifact pulled from the Hiwassee River earlier this year.  The wooden "corn pounder" is undergoing carbon-dating to verify its age.

Thankful for Cox Roofing, who's committed to repair the roof on the Cherokee Homestead Exhibit's Winter House, and for Board Member Curt Wheeler who cleaned up the exhibit recently.

Board Bytes!

CCCRA Secretary Victoria Ewing Ware ("Vickie") is a Florence, Kentucky, native. After four years as a UK Wildcat, she embarked on a career with five companies that moved her to four states - Tennessee, Texas, Georgia (3 times), and Wisconsin - and the Republic of Ireland. Vickie was lucky to travel extensively, both for work and pleasure.  Current count is six continents and 25+ countries.
Along the way, Vickie met her husband Hugh, a McCaysville, Georgia native, and graduate of Young Harris College and UGA.  They spent 15+ years in Acworth GA, planning to retire to the mountains. They found their piece of Hayesville heaven in 2013, then built a house and moved here fulltime in 2016.

After just two weeks unpacking, Hugh and Vickie took in one of CCCRA's Friday night concerts.  When then-president Sandy Nicolette came to collect for the "red bucket",  Vickie asked "do you need any help"? By the next Friday, Vickie was helping set-up for the concert and selling beverages in the "beer garden".  In short-order, Vickie was building CCCRA's new website and was elected to the board that October. The following year she was elected Secretary, and for the last two years wore both VP and Secretary hats.

Besides CCCRA, Vickie also volunteers at her church - Immaculate Heart of Mary, is treasurer for her neighborhood's POA, and lends her computer skills to other groups in the area.   She and Hugh adopted cats Gus and Grace two years ago.

Vickie is thankful that Clay County is full of folks that don't sit around and say "someone ought to...", but instead give generously of their time and talent to making Clay County  a wonderful place to live.
