Principal's News
Dear Parents and Caregivers

Our end of year is fast approaching. That does not mean that we are slowing down in any way. In fact, I would say that we are speeding up as we get ready for the end of year.

Our teachers are currently writing the end of year reports for each child. They are also preparing for our Art in the Park celebration day while fitting in assembly practices, singing assemblies and if you are a senior or middle school student getting ready for Wairakei's Got Talent.

Each one of these experiences make up the traditions of the end of year. You are welcome to come to these onsite school events. Please check the calendar for dates and times.

Together with the PTA we decided to cancel the in-school discos for 2020. There was too much happening, and we felt that it was an overload for families. We will look to hold these successful events in 2021.

We sent an excited group of swimmers to the Annual Interschool Swimming Sports. This is not an event we often excel in however we are always happy participants. This year we certainly outdid ourselves with our results. I did hear on the grapevine that we came fourth. Not sure if this is accurate however happy to take the place as I heard about it. We had the following students placed:

Year 4 Boys 25m Freestyle - Harry S - 3rd
Year 4 Girls 25m Breastroke - Lizzie H - 1st
Year 5 Boys 25m Freestyle - Te Whetu D - 1st
Year 5 Girls 25m Breastroke - Rhea B - 3rd
Year 5 Girls 50m Freestyle - Sophie B 2nd;
Claire M 3rd
Year 5 Girls 50m Breastroke - Sophie B 2nd
Year 6 Girls 25m Freestyle - Chloe W 3rd
Year 6 Girls 25m Backstroke - Lucy S 3rd
Year 6 Girls 25m Breastroke - Hannah J 3rd

We currently have two trucks in the carpark. The mobile dental clinic has been with us for a while and will remain in the carpark until the end of the year. They will be returning at the start of Term 1, 2021.

The Life Education mobile classroom is back again, and our students are enjoying having Harold on site. There were some questions about Harold's safety during our fire drill yesterday. Michelle, our Life Education teacher assured everyone that Harold has his own fire-safe cupboard. We were complimented on our ability to get out of the classrooms during the fire drill by the Fire Safety Assessor who happened to be on site. He thought we did that extremely well for a primary school. We should all take pride in this praise.

I would like to have another push for hats to be brought to school. I am seeing a number of students not wearing the correct uniform hat. Our school hat is a navy blue bucket or wide-brim hat.

Lost Property. I am at a loss about this cupboard and the amount of clothing in it. We have a lot of old uniforms with student names who have left the school. They must belong to someone. We have brand new polo fleeces and hoodies hiding in there. If you ask your child to go and look, they will open the door take one look without stepping inside and then close the door. We need some help to sort this. The clothing will be put out on the court for our students to look at. Not that I am hopeful about that either. If they follow the same pattern as the lost property cupboard they will look at the sky as they move around the pile.

I know it a busy time for you all. I hope that you can come to the school to see the wonderful art our students are producing. Art in the Park has been a success for us so far by getting the students to talk about their creation and why it is important.

Our Senior Kapa Haka group are going to St John’s Wood Rest Home to perform on Friday. I know they will make us proud. The Junior Kapa Haka group will have an opportunity to perform at Art in the Park.

It is all go here at Wairakei.

Fabulous Features of Nonfiction Books

Hunting for features of nonfiction books has been our latest challenge in Room 2. Finding these features will help students understand more about the world around us, and how each feature tells them different parts of information needed for learning.

Some of the features of nonfiction are:
  • Headings and subheadings
  • Table of Contents
  • Index
  • Illustrations
  • Photographs
  • Captions
  • Maps
  • Diagrams
  • Glossary
  • Bold Print
  • Footnotes
We made a chart to show us what each feature looks like. Mrs Ross found a great information sheet from Twinkl and added it to our window display.

These features are all on our list of things to find. Working together in mixed groups and pairs, the students read through some of the amazing Connected Journal series. We were on a mission to find information and the above features of text. What a challenge.

Great discussions were held around what the features looked like, how they help us to understand the information, and what the purpose of each feature is. Each of these features help us in our comprehension of nonfiction books.

Most of the class were able to identify each of the features in our Connected books. The only thing that was missing in these was the index. The class looked at an amazing nonfiction book about dinosaurs and discovered how the index works and that it is all alphabetically organised. We continue to practice our new found skills and knowledge of these features and do pop quizzes to show we can remember each feature.

“Learning about these features tells us a lot about the books, like using the index." Carys

“This was not easy to do at first because we needed to know what the features were." Emma

This was a challenging, but fun activity to find out about all of the features and things in nonfiction books." Scarlett

“This was a challenging and hard activity but now I know more about what is in a nonfiction book." Paige

“It was fun learning new and challenging stuff and working with a buddy.” Lilly
