Leadership Highlight

Starting February 1, Dr. Tara Chang will serve as the Division Chief of Nephrology

As was announced in October's issue of Nephrology Unfiltered, Dr. Glenn Chertow has been appointed as the inaugural Associate Chair for Fellowship Programs as of October 1, 2020. Glenn has served as the Chief of the Division of Nephrology for more than 13 years, during which time our division saw major expansions of its clinical, educational, and research footprints. Glenn has received countless accolades not only for his research, which has provided critical insights into treatments for kidney disease, but also for his devotion to mentorship, which has influenced a generation of Nephrologists. To ensure that he has the time to devote to his new role, Glenn will step down as the Chief of Nephrology on February 1, 2021.

The Division of Nephrology and the Department of Medicine are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Tara I. Chang as the next Chief of the Division of Nephrology at Stanford University.  Dr. Chang is currently Associate Professor of Medicine and Director of Clinical Research in the Division of Nephrology.  She is one of our “home grown” former fellows, having completed her fellowship in Nephrology and Cardiovascular Outcomes Research at Stanford, and earned a Master of Science degree while conducting research before joining the faculty.  Dr. Chang serves in leadership roles with the National Kidney Foundation, the American Heart Association, and Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO). She maintains an active clinical research program that focuses on cardiovascular outcomes among persons with kidney disease. Dr. Chang is committed to continuing to fulfill our Division’s mission for excellence in patient care, education and research while fostering innovation and diversity. Dr. Chang will be the sixth Chief in the Division’s history after its two founding co-Chiefs, Dr. Rex Jamison and the late Dr. Roy Maffly, succeeded by Dr. Bryan Myers, Dr. Timothy Meyer, and Dr. Chertow.

Congratulations Dr. Chang and Dr. Chertow!

Nephrology Fellow Dr. Pablo Garcia shares two projects he is currently working on

In December, Dr. Garcia participated in the NIDDK Network of Minority Health Research Investigators Virtual West Regional Meeting, where he presented his research project entitled "Checkpoint Inhibitor therapy and Kidney Immune Related Adverse Events" and won the Clinical Science Research Award. The primary research mentor on this project is Dr. Shuchi Anand, and Dr. Margaret Stedman is the biostatistician working on this project. Dr. Tamiko Katsumoto is another mentor from the Department of Immunology and Rheumatology.

Dr. Garcia is also working with research collaborators in Guatemala and recently published the work "Population estimates of Glomerular Filtration Rate and Risk Factors for Chronic Kidney Disease in Guatemala" this is the first population-based study on CKD in Guatemala. Above, you can see the visual abstract for this work and the full article is featured in the "New Research" section below and can also be seen here

Get to know more about Nephrology Biostatistician Dr. Margaret Stedman in this month's Division Spotlight

Dr. Margaret Stedman joined the Nephrology division in 2015. She has been collaborating on a variety of projects related to the allocation of kidney transplants and care of patients with CKD. Prior to coming to Stanford she completed her PhD in Biostatistics from Boston University in 2009, where she focused on methods for analyzing cluster randomized trials of academic detailing interventions. In 2010 she received at T-32 award from Harvard University to investigate competing risk in total hip replacement. Upon completing her T32, she became a program director and mathematical statistician for the Surveillance Research Program at the National Cancer Institute where she worked on survival measures for the SEER registry data and managed a portfolio of grants including the CISNET cooperative agreement. Her research interests are broadly in the application of statistical methods for healthcare data, with particular interest in survival analysis, and nonparametric methods. In her spare time she enjoys playing with her 2 small children, gardening, and hiking in the great outdoors. We asked Dr. Stedman a few questions, enjoy!

What is a project you are currently enjoying working on?

There are so many it is hard to choose. I am excited about completing a project with Dr Tan on the reliability of the Karnofsky score. I am also excited to be working on relative survival methods for analysis of patients with ESRD with Dr Chertow.

What is one thing that can instantly make your day better?

Going outside for some fresh air, checking on my vegetable garden. Hearing my kids participate in remote school often makes me smile.

What was the last thing you read?

Do music scores count? I also enjoy playing the piano and sewing. Reading up on these to improve my skills in arts and crafts has been uplifting in stressful times.

What is your favorite part of the work day?

I like the beginning of the day where I eat breakfast and plan my day. I also enjoy some of the connections made over zoom.
