DANA POINT COVID-19 COMMUNITY UPDATE NOVEMBER 19
Check our Facebook Page for the latest updates.

City:  The Dana Point Turkey Trot has been a beloved Orange County tradition for 43 years, and we all know you just don’t give up on tradition! To accommodate the modifications put in place and ensure everyone remains healthy and safe, they’ve decided to change course and are asking you to burn those pre-Thanksgiving meal calories, virtually. Run the race before you stuff your face – but in your own place!  It’s not too late to register here.

City Hall will be closed Wednesday and Thursday, November 26th and 27th in observance of Thanksgiving.

The Dana Point Chamber of Commerce has put a call out to local residents/ business owners who have outdoor heaters/tents, that they’re willing to part with temporarily or donate them to local restaurants that must now operate exclusively outside. If you are a business in need of these items please contact the Chamber of Commerce and they will do their best to connect you with someone who’s willing to help.

It's officially starting to feel like the holiday season. Holiday lights around the City and in Dana Point Harbor are on.

Now more than ever it’s important we all stay safe through the holidays and #MaskUpDP.

County:  Earlier this week under order of Governor Newsom and the California Department of Public Health (CDPH), the County of Orange was moved into the Purple Tier, the State’s most restrictive tier. Impacted industries and activities in Orange County had 24 hours in which to comply with this action and make necessary modifications. The State made this directive to address the significant increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and protect the State’s health care system. The State’s press release may be found here. The County is asking residents and businesses to:
  1. Get Tested for COVID-19: The OC Health Care Agency officials are urging residents, especially those with any symptoms, to get tested for the virus.
  2. Stay Home if You Don’t Feel Well
  3. Stay Home When Possible
  4. Do Not Gather with More Than 3 (Healthy) Households
  5. Wear a Face Covering
  6. Wash Your Hands Often
The County also announced a grant funding opportunity earlier this week for restaurants to build up their outdoor dining areas and will provide $1,000 in reimbursement for items such as tenting, heaters, etc. Purchases must have been made Nov. 16 – Dec. 23. Applications open tomorrow, November 20th at 9am, and they’re awarding 1,000 grants.  More information can be found here.

State: California is now entering its third shutdown of the pandemic.  Most of California’s residents are now in the restrictive purple tier, which prohibits indoor activities for gyms, restaurants, theaters and churches. The move also halts reopening plans for schools that haven’t already opened campuses. The Governor also strengthened his mask mandate to require Californians wear a face covering at almost all times outside of the home.

Today the Governor announced that non-essential work and gatherings must stop from 10pm-5am in counties in the purple tier. This will take effect at 10pm on Saturday and remain in effect until December 21.  Read more about it here.

Federal:  Much progress has been made toward COVID-19 vaccines.  Both Pfizer and Moderna are expected to submit applications for “emergency use authorization” (EUA) within days.  This follows the positive results of phase 3 clinical trials, showing extremely high levels of effectiveness.  The FDA has said it will convene its independent vaccine advisory committee to review any COVID-19 EUA requests, and the first meeting could occur as early as December 9th.

Services and Resources Directory is now housed on the COVID-19 page on the City’s website.  New services and resources will be shared in this update, then moved over to the City’s COVID-19 webpage.  You can access that information here
