Last chance! National Arts and Culture Impact Survey

National Arts and Culture Impact Survey
Ontario Presents has joined forces with 30 national and provincial arts service organizations representing a range of artistic disciplines across the country to develop the National Arts and Culture Impact Survey (NACIS).

A FINAL REMINDER that ALL arts organizations, artists, and arts workers across Canada are encouraged to participate in the survey by Monday, November 23. Please take 10-15 minutes over the next few days to complete this important survey!

Your contribution to this survey is invaluable to helping Ontario Presents and our fellow ASOs advocate on your behalf through the challenging months ahead.

A Message from the Means of Production Collective

Means of Production is a collective of Toronto-based Production Managers and Technical Directors advocating for safe, healthy, sustainable, and equitable work practices in Live Arts. They have been meeting together to research, consult, discuss, collaborate, and respond to the following questions:

  • What are the conditions under which we would be willing to return to work?
  • What is the work environment we want to create?
  • How can we make sure that the terms under which we return to work support an upending of existing oppressive power structures, and ensure safe and healthy working conditions for everyone?

Generator is incubating the Collective through the next year of development, while they research and assess the state of production leadership across performance disciplines in Canada; and develop more equitable, safe, and sustainable production practices. The Collective is submitting an application to the Canada Council for a Sector Innovation grant to support this initiative. If you would like to add your name to a list of signatories, or to find out more, please contact meansofproductionto@gmail.com.

#Lights-On Reopening Guide

This week, #Lights-On: Recovery and Reboot in Live Entertainment announced the release of an online venue reopening guide for the Toronto live entertainment industry. #Lights-On is a series of outreach activities organized by Ryerson University’s School of Creative Industries at FCAD (Faculty of Communication and Design), Toronto Arts Council and Toronto Arts Foundation, with support from the City of Toronto, TO Live, SOCAN and the Toronto Alliance for the Performing Arts.

The #Lights-On Venue Reopening Guide is a collaborative effort of live entertainment organizations and individuals that reviewed existing published materials and best practices to build a digital resource that venues, and venue organizers can use to safely reopen. Throughout the process of creating the guide which began in June, the City of Toronto has been involved and we have followed public health recommendations throughout.

The guide is regularly updated with new resources and public health updates as they get announced. For Venue managers and others interested in learning more, the organizers will be hosting a workshop on Wednesday Nov 25, 11:00am – 12noon - find out more and RSVP here.

New Audience Data

Audience Outlook Monitor - Ontario

In May 2020, the OAC offered organizations that receive OAC operating grants the opportunity to participate in WolfBrown's Audience Outlook Monitor, a study on the impact of COVID-19 on arts audiences.

Wave 3 findings for Ontario findings have now been tabulated by WolfBrown and have been summarized in the form of Research Notes. This briefing represents 11,295 survey
responses collected from Ontario arts & culture attendees in June, 9,365 collected
in August, and 7,318 collected in October 2020.

Key findings include:
  • "As COVID infection rates have climbed towards a second peak in October, arts-goers’ comfort at cultural venues of all types has dropped even below its June level."
  • "The proportion of respondents who are waiting to be vaccinated
before returning to the arts has increased steadily (currently at 34%)."
  • "Almost all respondents (96%) plan to get vaccinated eventually, but only 31% plan to do so as soon as a vaccine becomes available."
  • "About half of the respondents of all age groups reported that
they didn’t watch any cultural programs online in the previous two weeks, but among those who did, older respondents were more likely to have paid for those experiences"

Habo Entertainment Barometer, October Edition

In April 2020, Habo and Lepointdevente.com published the first edition of the Entertainment Barometer, a longitudinal study that analyzes the evolution of the attitude of Quebec entertainment consumers in relation to the current pandemic.

Six months later, they have released new information about Quebec patrons' interest in returning to cultural events.

Key findings include:

  • "Audiences for almost all entertainment activities are now feeling more deprived by their absence than they were at the start of the pandemic"
  • "Quebec entertainment consumers seem to have become accustomed to the pandemic, and are much less worried about it now than they were when it started."
  • "Consumers still have a high level of concern about attending crowded venues such as bars and nightclubs, festivals, concerts, and sporting events."
  • "While the impact of the pandemic on income stabilizes, the new restrictions point to a short-term decrease in entertainment spending."

Study Indicates Importance of Ventilation

A new German study suggests that "face masks and limits on numbers are important, but good ventilation technology is the most essential ingredient of all in reducing the risk of the coronavirus spreading at public events indoors."

"The study also found that reducing venue capacity, having multiple arena entrances and seating spectators can have a major impact on the number of contacts people accumulate. Its recommendations include only allowing food to be eaten at seats, open-air waiting areas, mask-wearing for the concert’s duration and employing stewards to make sure people stick to hygiene rules... Researchers... found hygiene measures such as mask-wearing and social-distancing should remain in place as long as the pandemic persists, while seating plans and number of guests should be adjusted based on the incidence of the virus."

Ontario Budget Overview from ONN

The Ontario Nonprofit Network has provided a useful overview of the recent 2020 Ontario Budget. The overview includes a full budget analysis as well as highlighting takeaways such as remaining gaps, bill implementation measures affecting nonprofits, and new supports to parts of the nonprofit sector. The latter item includes the "one-time commitment of $25 million in emergency funding for Ontario “arts institutions” (not defined what this term means) to help cover operating losses related to the pandemic," on which we are awaiting further detail. We do know that this funding will be administered through the Ontario Arts Council.

ONN also continues to call for a $680 million stabilization fund to support the nonprofit sector through the pandemic.
