S.O.S. - Joining Together Across Georgia
THIS WEEKEND
We are sending out an SOS to our former and current MS in Conflict Management students and Center for Conflict Management alumni to ask all of you who live in Georgia to consider using your mediation skills at this time of need.

As you know, Georgia is receiving national attention in this election season, and tensions are running high.

In an effort to prevent violence and build community cohesion during this volatile period, The Trust Network was created to tap into the incredible infrastructure of Community Mediation Centers nationally that were established by the Civil Rights Act of 1964. The intent of The Trust Network is for the Community Mediation Centers to be conveners, working closely with other organizations in their city or state, or both. What is critical, and where you can help, is to have people trained in dispute resolution watching for evidence of tension, notifying The Trust Network as part of a collective early warning system, and then engage in early response. Responses are to calm tensions.

This Saturday, November 21, from 12:00 Noon to 1:30 p.m., the Community Mediation Center in Savannah will be hosting a workshop with the Trust Network. We are asking all students and Georgia-based alumni of our MS in Conflict Management program and our Center for Conflict Management to consider attending this workshop to learn how to support The Trust Network’s early warning and early response initiative. You do not have to be a registered mediator to attend.

Joining Together Across Georgia,
an Introduction to the Trust Network

When: Saturday, Nov 21, 2020, 12:00-1:30 PM Eastern Time (US and Canada)
Register Now
After registering, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the workshop.

The Trust Network is also conducting a series of training sessions on conflict early warning and early response.

If you want to help in one of these ways explained below, please join as a volunteer:

  • Geographic Information System/Map Creation
  • Geolocation (finding the latitude/longitude of incidents to the street or neighborhood level)
  • Media Monitoring (finding deeper information, creating reports)
  • Technology (ensuring the platform and interfaces are running smoothly)
  • Research and Analysis (analyzing information and creating situation reports, conducting statistical analyses, etc.)

These roles are focused on processing information sent to us via SMS or a form filled out on-line regarding conditions in specific locations. That information will be used in trend analyses and will be placed onto their digital map. Once a warning is evident, it will be communicated to people in that location who they know and trust.

For current students interested in this kind of approach, Dr. Bock will be teaching INCM 9530 – Information & Communication Technologies this coming Spring semester and is open to allowing graduate students outside of the School of Conflict Management, Peacebuilding and Development to enroll.
