Our President writes...

Dear fellow Rotarians and Friends.

We had a great meeting on 24 November. The month being ‘Rotary Foundation Month ‘ gave us the opportunity to recognise and award Certificates to the Rotarians who achieved the “Centurion Status” in the Rotary year to date. Many more recognitions to come in the New Year. James Shevlin additionally was awarded a Rotary PHF pin with two sapphires for this ongoing support of our Rotary Charity ‘The Rotary Foundation’.

LANE COVE ROTARY CLUB WELCOMES ROTARY PEACE FELLOW LINH NONG
Rotary Peace Fellow awardee Linh Nong from Vietnam was our special guest at the 24 November meeting. Linh is studying for her subject at Queensland University for 18 months. Presently on a 3 months 'Field Experience' with The Institute of Economics and Peace at St Leonards.  It was a great pleasure to have her join us for the evening and giving us an overview of her Peace Fellow experience to date. President Silvio, on behalf of the members, wished her an enjoyable Sydney experience whilst being hosted by our Treasurer PP Tania May and DGE Lindsay May.

OUR CHRISTMAS MEGA-RAFFLE SALES NEARING CONCLUSION
This week’s meeting was devoted to summarizing this year’s major fund-raising activity in place of the annual Lane Cove Rotary Fair, which became a COVID-19 victim. PE Lalitha Warren, Chair of the Fair Committee did an outstanding job in ensuring the whole of the club came together to make this a very successful undertaking! Many members worked hard and contributed in a variety of ways to the success of the “Christmas Mega-Raffle”, generating funds for our club's many charity projects.

Special thanks to the members who procured and promoted the valuable prizes from our sponsors, the members who volunteered their time every weekend to man the raffle stands and last but not least the architect of our “lanecoverotaryfair.org” website, PP Stephen for developing the site to not only promote the event but also to sell many raffle tickets through it. The silent auction for a signed Swans guernsey and a signed Swans football will be available up until the date of the raffle draw.

We anticipate the last of the 4,000 printed tickets will be sold this Saturday when we have a stand at Home HQ Artarmon. The official drawing of the raffle will be held in the grandstand of The Lane Cove Pool, Saturday 12 December 2020, 2.00 pm. Our guest of honour drawing the raffle prizes will be Sydney Swan's legend Jude Bolton and this will be live-streamed on Facebook via 'In The Cove'.

Lane Cove Rotary wins Hyecorp Community Grant

President Silvio was excited to learn this week that our Club's recent application for a 2020 Hyecorp Community Grant of $2000 was one of six winners. Hyecorp received a record number of Grant applications this year all of which were of a very high calibre with many creative ideas of how to 'give back to the community'. This is something Hyecorp feels very strongly about having themselves been giving back to our communities for many years. The Rotary Club of Lane Cove will now source three recycled plastic benches with the grant and arrange to have these positioned throughout Lane Cove wherever they're most needed for members of the community to rest on when out and about in Lane Cove. Congratulations to President Silvio who was the key instrumental driver of this application.

Do you know any Sydney Swans footy fans?

While our raffle tickets continue to sell well, our silent auction has stalled at the bargain prices shown above. If you know anyone who might be interested in bidding on these items, then please email them the link below. Assuming these people are fans, what better way to receive their prize/s by having them personally presented to you on the 12th December by Swans legend Jude Bolton.

and finally...

I invented a new word this week!
Plagiarism!

Helvetica and Times New Roman walk into a bar.
“Get out of here!” shouts the bartender. “We don’t serve your type.”

Knock! Knock!
Who’s there?
Control Freak.
Con…
OK, now you say, “Control Freak who?”

Why did the chicken go to the séance?
To get to the other side.
