News & Updates
Congratulations to the MassHire Central Region Workforce Board!
Launched in 2020 in response to unprecedented labor market volatility and inequity, the Future of Work Grand Challenge announced its selection of six workforce board pilot partners, regional organizations that advance community-led workforce and economic development strategies, including the Central Region's MassHire Board. Chosen for their records of innovation and effectiveness, each workforce board selected will receive tailored support and funding to pilot innovations to connect more than 25,000 COVID-impacted workers with new skills and employment opportunities. The Worcester, Massachusetts-based organization provides career development services and more to meet the needs of diverse employers and jobseekers in more than 40 communities.

Success after High School DART Available
See the new Success after High School DART, now updated and available on the DART website! DARTs offer snapshots of district and school performance, allowing users to easily track select secondary and postsecondary data elements over time, and make sound, meaningful comparisons to the state or to "comparable" organizations.

CVTE Graduate Follow-up Survey Reminders
For the past year and more, DESE has been highlighting new Perkins V requirements and resources, and districts are incorporating these into career, vocational, and technical education program improvement efforts. This included definitions of the new core indicators, the CLNA guide and worksheet, highlights of the Perkins grant application, and more. See the Perkins V Manual online for more. With Perkins V, the core indicator changes include shifts for the Graduate Follow-up Report: As a reminder,

  • DESE will not be collecting graduate follow-up data for 2019 grads. Districts still may want to collect this for their purposes & learning, and are not required to submit this to the state.
  • DESE will be collecting graduate follow-up data for 2020 grads. Beginning with this group, the timeline for this metric shifts, and should reflect graduates’ postsecondary placement in the 3-6 months following graduation. This is a good time to be following up with graduates. DESE plans to collect this early in 2021; the portal will be available soon for districts to submit this information to DESE.
For more, see the CVTE Data Instructions resources online, and please be in touch with your CCTE Liaison if you have questions about conducting the graduate follow-up survey for your district.

The Safety Stop
Continuing the DESE/MAVA safety collaboration, the December session of The Safety Stop will cover Respiratory Protection. Hosted by CCTE’s Safety Specialist, David Edmonds, The Safety Stop introduces a general collaborative approach to safety. This workshop is suitable for anyone interested in safety at any level. Highly qualified safety instructors will make topical presentations, followed by specific and general discussions of real world safety problems.

December’s guest will be Marvin Lewiton, Industrial Hygiene Supervisor of the OSHA Consultation Program at the Massachusetts Department of Labor Standards (DLS). Martin is a primary safety instructor for DLS, with a number of accreditations and specializations, including Respiratory Protection. Martin will discuss CTE masking requirements, especially in the area of Medical, Health and Dental Cooperative Education N95 Masking and Fit Testing. This will be an exciting and practical presentation.

This Safety Stop session will take place on Thursday, December 10, 2020, 9-10:00am. To register, see this link. https://www.doe.mass.edu/conference/?ConferenceID=10252

Communications Survey
Clear communication is essential to bring us together and plan for a safe future. DESE is continuously working to improve communication with all those involved in and impacted by our public schools. Please take this two-minute survey to help inform DESE's communication efforts. Thank you!

Safety Corner - from Dave Edmonds, CCTE's Safety Specialist
Over the months that we have been publishing The Safety Corner in the CCTE Newsletter I have discussed Industrial, Motor Vehicle and Home safety. There have been a variety of topics which focused on individuals taking personal responsibility for safety. For today, I'm going in a different direction.

For decades, I have introduced my safety classes with this question: How are you doing today? I encouraged a frank discussion of the topic and found out that even though people were working hard to stay safe, they didn't think about how concentrating on safety was affecting them personally. As we continue into this emergency, take some time to self assess. Are you doing things for you? Only you know about you. Take some time to figure it out. I have found that a refreshed mind acts better in an emergency.

Stay safe!
