CHILDREN'S CORNER

At the sudden onset of the pandemic and church closing earlier this year, many families of faith felt they were left alone to navigate for themselves.  With many of the children's programs being modified and Sabbath School classes still closed, parents fear there is a void in their child's spiritual experience.

The home, however, was, and still is the ideal nest where children develop.  No school or Sabbath school classroom can match the simplicity and power of the home in providing three-dimensional, firsthand education.  Ellen White reminds us in Child Guidance that at home, the foundations are laid.

"Upon all parents there rests the obligation of giving physical, mental, and spiritual instruction.  It should be the object of every parent to secure to his child a well-balanced, symmetrical character.  This is a work of no small magnitude and importance - a work requiring earnest thought and prayer and no less than patient, persevering effort.  A right foundation must be laid, a framework, strong and firm, erected, and then day by day the work of building, polishing, perfecting, must go forward" (17.2).

Dearest families, we are not left alone when we have heaven's little ones in our care.  The One who calls the little children to come to Him will be there to navigate for us.  Let us grasp this unprecedented opportunity, presented by these unprecedented times, to spend more time with our children as Jesus did with the children who were brought to Him, and to reflect on the values, principles, truth and faith that He wants us to impart to them.  Every day is an opportunity to lay the foundation- in every meal around the table, every prayer said, every hand held, every story read, and in every nature walk taken.  It all starts within the little place we call 'home'.

As we near the end of this year of uncertainty, may we remember to plant the seeds of faith and water the grounds of our children's wonder.  May we remember that our four walls have purpose, but the world around us does too.  It is my prayer that in the upcoming year we will treasure the time, find the freedom, and make the memories that will mold and shape the hearts and curiosity in our children and help them grow in Jesus.  On harder days, let us hold tight to the blessing we have in being their parents, in being their leaders, and in aiding the endless pursuit of their passions and higher calling.

When it was declared a pandemic in March, the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) thrust us into an era of uncertainty and multiple crises—health, financial, relational and more. Today, with over 800 cases per day in Ontario, we find ourselves in a second wave.

In times like these, we need messages that remind us that this world is not our home, and we are called to share this good news with others. Therefore we will be hosting a virtual week of prayer, featuring various Ontario Conference pastors. Their presentations will be based on the General Conference’s week of prayer readings, themed “Reach the World: Faithfulness in Christian Lifestyle.” They will give a unique spin on the readings followed by millions of Adventists worldwide.

This week of prayer is calling us to sit at the feet of Jesus daily, allowing Him to transform our character and lifestyle so we can be more effective witnesses. Let us join in reflection and prayer as an Ontario Conference family every night. Click the links below to watch the nightly presentations.
