Thanksgiving Day Service

Good Shepherd Church of Wailuku and Trinity by-the-Sea will hold our Thanksgiving Services together at 9 AM on Thursday, November 26th in Trinity's outdoor sanctuary. The Rev. Moki Hino will be the Celebrant at Holy Eucharist.

There will be a basket available for collection of non-perishable food items which will be given to the Maui Food Bank and the Thanksgiving Morning offertory will be given to A Cup of Cold Water.

Masks must be worn and required distancing will be observed.

Trinity's Mini Christmas Bazaar

A small Christmas Shopping Event (with venders) will take place in Kilolani Hall from 8 AM to Noon on Saturday, November 28th! There will be baked goods, handmade crafts, and jewelry.  Wear your mask, bring your gift list and your friends and neighbors, and stop in! The Trinity Treasures Thrift Shop as well as the Trinity Container of "the big stuff" will both be open during that time as well. Volunteers are needed as well as shoppers - please let Barb or Joan know if you can offer some help!
Notes from the Bishop's Committee
  • Trinity's Annual Meeting is scheduled for Sunday, January 31st following the Sunday Eucharist - mark your calendars ... details will follow.
  • Outgoing Jr. Warden, Barb Zipf, and current Jr. Warden, Joan Villa, have been appointed as the Nominating Committee. If you might be interested in serving on the Bishop's Committee or as a 2021 Convention Delegate, please don't be shy! Speak up and let them know! Elections take place at the Annual Meeting.
  • Due to Covid restrictions for large public/worship gatherings, Christmas Eve at Trinity will indeed be different this year. Watch your in-box for the December Newsletter or eBlasts regarding information about Service Schedules and reservation requests. There were 130 attending Christmas Eve last year ... we will not be permitted to seat that many this year.
Report from the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii Annual Convention
by one of Trinity's Delegates

The convention was in some ways a really great virtual convention-- it went quickly, it was not belabored with debate or endless argument or such. It was very much on the business of voting. The videos played were nicely done, and respectful. It was touching to see the Honoring in Memoriam, and a little review of some of the greater issues this year with Covid and the Church. The extra speeches were kept to a minimum. The music was wonderful and I enjoyed the one opportunity to sing at the end - I did think that we could have had a few more of those moments since we were virtual. It was done in a matter of less than 3 hours, and smoothly flowed in addressing the main business of voting.

There are things I would encourage them to change for next year - because, while Convention is about the business of voting on some things, it is also about a coming together of our Diocese as a whole - to worship, uplift, address, and get to know each other and, in sharing our voices, to become one greater whole. It is about people, not just the dispensing of the administrative issues.
I found it frustrating that the Chat feature was disabled between delegates and clergy so there was really was no way to talk to each other. I wonder if perhaps interaction could have been allowed during the two 15 minute breaks and even for a full hour or more during log-in time before the convention began.

Bishop Fitzpatrick essentially said that he felt that Convention would not ever go back to what it had been in the past and would probably instead be more of a virtual reality. Part of being in the church is the interactive ability to meet, get to know, share ideas and thoughts, become friends, and have participation. Not having any way to really interact with others at the Convention really changed the tone and focus. I was glad the voting was serious, quick, and not contested, but there was also no conviviality among delegates and other attendees. I hope that the Diocese will find a way for people to interact with each other and be more able to share with each other as they plan for next year. It is not impossible to create on-line breakout sessions with time and activities that are fun and interactive.

Stewardship Update

Trinity's Stewardship kick-off was on October 4th. We have received 24 pledges totaling $50,449. Have you sent in your card committing your gifts of time, treasure, and talent? As we approach Thanksgiving, may each of us become newly aware that everything we have has been given to us by God.... what do you have that you did not receive? (And the older you are, the more you have received!) Pray quietly about it, thank God for His innumerable blessings, and listen for His guidance as to how to show your gratitude.
Congratulations are Due!

Na Hoku Hanohano Awards ... both of Cora and Rama Camarillo's sons have won awards again this year for their musical gifts! Kala'e for Best Contemporary Acoustic Album "Feel at Home" and Kamaka for Best R&B Album "S.O.U.L. Songs of Unexpected Life"!

Boy Scout Troop #22 Court of Honor ... Ryder and Maverick Zipf both received the Rank of Eagle Scout at an Awards Ceremony on November 14th. Trinity was the beneficiary of their Eagle Scout projects last year as they repaired and refinished the Sanctuary benches, Communion rail, and kneelers in the Sanctuary and repainted and refreshed the Book Pavilion.
Faith Confirmed

At last January's Annual Meeting, everyone was invited by Bishop Fitzpatrick to take a Diocesan-wide Course in Confirmation Renewal. Marty Serwatowski and Mary LaDu accepted his request and perservered right through the challenges of having to study together via Facetime. Here's what it meant to them!
Marty wrote:
"On June 10, 2020; Mary LaDu and I completed the 19 Chapters of the Confirmation preparation book, Faith Confirmed. We began the study back in March before the mandatory quarantine of Covid and then continued on  with  weekly conference calls every Wednesday after Morning Prayer.
The book presented Episcopal beliefs in a very practical manner with questions and Bible Study discussion at the end of every chapter.  It was a period of reflection and exchange of viewpoints since I was confirmed in my 60’s, and Mary was confirmed as a teenager.  We shared a lot of personal information about our upbringing and began a  special bond.  I was blessed to have such an insightful partner for this study and  and to develop a life-long friendship."
Mary added:
"It was such a blessing to go through this study booklet with Marty especially during the time when we were homebound. I learned so much about our faith, Bible History, and church traditions! As Marty said, I was confirmed as a 14 year old so it was a real (grown up) learning experience for me. We both looked forward to sharing our research, as well as deep thoughts and feelings each Wednesday. Marty was a wonderful leader, keeping us on track, and choosing the prayers that began and ended each study. Those hours helped to forge a warm friendship, as well as feeding our spirits."

Bishop Fitzpatrick will be the Celebrant at Trinity on December 13th at which time Marty and Mary will make their Reaffirmation of Faith.

Trinity during Covid 2020

The Bishop's Committee has been trying to facilitate the filming of our Sunday Service for on-line viewing. A camera has been purchased but the challenge now is the distance of our Sanctuary to the Wi-Fi access in either Kilolani Hall or the module housing our Thrift Store. In the meantime, here is a peek at what things look like with masks and distancing, with one responder and one singer filling in for the rest of the congregation and a very careful distribution of Communion. (Thanks to Susie Davis for pictures)
As we approach the seasons of being thankful and of giving gifts, perhaps we could each follow the suggestions of this unique Advent Calendar!
2021
As we look back at the past year and look forward to the one ahead:
(a prayer from the website of the Episcopal Diocese of Hawaii)

The courage it took to sail into unknown waters
guided by the stars, the clouds, the seas and the rising sun
lives in us by the gift of the Holy Spirit.

We are sailing into new waters and nothing will ever be the same,
but we are guided by the cross of Jesus Christ,
we are secure in the love of God through Jesus Christ,
we are piloted by the Holy Spirit,
and we are assured of the outcome.
