Musings from Our President

This Giving Season we have so much to be thankful for

With "Giving Tuesday" approaching, we are acutely aware of the strain that everyone is under due to the COVID pandemic. Nevertheless, the mission of The National EMS Museum has continued, undaunted, to become the national repository of all things connected to the development and growth of prehospital emergency care from the time of the American Revolution to the present day. Some of the recent projects either completed or underway at the Museum include:

  • The Museum's 1954 Packard Henny Ambulance, that was purchased by a Museum benefactor, is now in the process of being restored in Tennessee;

  • Securing a pristine collection of every issue of JEMS that is now in the process of being digitized so that content can be utilized by researchers;

  • Traveling exhibits installed at the Central Ohio Fire Museum in Columbus, Ohio, the Carter County Museum in Ekalaka, Montana, and in the spring of 2021, the Fire Museum of Texas in Beaumont, Texas.

  • From Battlefield Medicine to Civilian EMS, a new exhibit installed at the Aurora Regional Fire Museum in Aurora, Illinois.

  • “Coffee With Doc” is an ongoing series of Zoom interviews with those who are part of EMS history.  These 30-45 minutes sessions are aired live on Facebook and recorded in The National EMS Museum archives.  These interviews enable viewers to hear from those with 30-, 40-, 50-, and 60-year histories in EMS. We explore how our profession evolved, improved, and reached the level of capability that we possess today.

None of these activities or projects and initiatives come without associated costs and expenses. Our entire board serve as volunteers and our Executive Director is paid far less than her efforts are worth. So, to continue and expand our effort and outreach, we would ask you to consider favoring us with your support on Giving Tuesday (December 1, 2020) and, if you are able to do so, beyond Giving Tuesday, become a member of The National EMS Museum...you can do it right here: MEMBERSHIP

This year The National EMS Museum is getting ready to kick off 15 amazing years of collecting and preserving EMS history with an ambitious 24 hour campaign to raise $15,000!  Founded in 2006 to save the collections of the To the Rescue Museum, NEMSM has grown into a go-to organization telling the national story of the emergency medical services, from the pioneers who led the way, to the stories of dedication and sacrifice that have led to innovation and growth in the field.

To celebrate 15 amazing years The National EMS Museum is going to embark on an ambitious project agenda and needs your help to make these programs a success.  In 2021 we will:
  • Host our first EMS History Weekend - everyone will be invited to submit presentations that celebrate this historic innovation and changes that helped EMS grow into the industry it is today.  An official call for presenters will come out in the new year.
  • In the first few months of 2021 we will open our digital archive and research library.  Many of our collections are sitting in boxes waiting for the funds to scan and upload lots of the great resources.  We will have three collections ready to go soon, thanks in large part to your generous donations to our Digitize the Thom Dick Collection and private support from individuals. More collections are in the queue which means more fundraising is needed to get the job done!
  • In the spring we will start our exhibition openings for the year, with FIVE slated to open in 2021,  both online and in person as museums start to open to the public again. Each exhibit can take $10,000 or more to produce and ship. Supporting exhibitions gets the EMS story out to our communities across the country.
  • In the Fall, in conjunction with our history weekend, we will release our first issue of our new print magazine featuring historical research, stories, and celebrations of EMS past and present.
  • Of course we are also excited to be joining NREMT and the Wisconsin Ambulance Association at their gatherings in 2021 (fingers crossed) and hope to confirm other shows throughout the year as the world gets back up to speed. Our Ambulance is nearly restored and ready to hit the road!

Any donation to this year's Giving Tuesday Campaign will ensure our success in 2021.  To donate please visit:
