For those in the U.S., hope you had a nice Thanksgiving! 🦃

As we look ahead to 2021, here's a Top 10 list of things to think about in your Marketing. The theme for this list is "zig when they zag."

  1. Assume face-to-face events will not return in 2021. Double down on your virtual event strategy. Think "good to great."
  2. Give your email list a break for all of January. See what happens.
  3. Don't ❌ have a TikTok strategy. Do ✅ have an ABM strategy.
  4. Speak to 52 customers (one per week).
  5. Add one member to your team with zero industry experience, zero marketing experience, but buckets of potential.
  6. Share fewer links on social media. Share nuggets and tidbits (without links). Engage more often with others.
  7. Take some of your gated content and set it free.
  8. Surprise your competitors by curating and sharing some of their content.
  9. Email nurture is dead. Instead of "moving prospects down the sales cycle," create the industry's leading email newsletter. Once you do that, the "moving prospects along" thing starts to happen naturally.
  10. Smile more often 😄

Happy Holidays.

-Dennis.

Around the Corner
Charting your career path

At Content Marketing World 2019, Amy Higgins gave a presentation titled "Charting the Course to a Career in Content Marketing."

I wrote about Amy's talk in a post for Content Marketing Institute.

Sections of the post:
  • Take stock of your skills
  • Test the waters
  • Uncover your gaps
Recently, I spoke to a friend-of-a-friend about his interest in transitioning from technical writer to product marketer.

He's been with his company for close to 20 years. He's not looking to leave, so I suggested that he explore a transition within his company.

He's built up credibility and a reputation there, which makes a transition easier to accomplish than pitching a new employer about a change in roles.

He already collaborates with peers in product marketing on new product launches.

My suggestion?

To create his own product marketing (e.g., product pages, data sheets, etc.) during the next product launch and share it with his peers for feedback.

No need to ask permission.

No need to worry whether they'll like it.

Just do it and see what happens.

Maybe he'll do such a good job that his peers will be the ones to initiate the job transfer.

Execs Are People, Too (And Other Marketing Lessons Learned During The Pandemic)

What happens when your executive audience strategy of white-glove, five-course meals (with wine pairings of course) made by a Top Chef contestant with your CEO and a luminary speaker is no longer an option?

As the pandemic threw a wrench into everyone’s marketing plans, it provided a new opportunity to engage executives across digital channels.

Amy Wagman, who works in Executive Relationship Marketing at VMware, shares her journey from building a digital marketing strategy, pivoting during the pandemic, and learning that executives aren’t as elusive as we all thought.

Amy will explore:

👉 Digital marketing strategy shifts that worked
👉 Content that was devoured
👉 Channels where engagement soared

Amy has over 18 years of marketing experience, with the past two years focused on digital marketing that targets executive audiences.

Twitter Corner
In each newsletter, I recommend a Twitter user to follow.

This week, I recommend Jacquie Chakirelis (@JacquieChak)

Jacquie is a speaker and Digital Strategy Director based in Cleveland.

I knew Jacquie from Twitter, then met her at Content Marketing World 2019 in Cleveland.

Recently, I watched Jacquie's talk from Content Marketing World 2020 -- I tweeted a photo that shows her NFL 🏈 allegiance.

Congratulations to Kim Ng on being hired the General Manager of the Miami Marlins - the first female GM in MLB history.

Kim grew up rooting for the Yankees, then spent a few years as Assistant GM for the Yankees.

I'm a lifelong Yankees fan.

More Yankee connections on the Marlins: Don Mattingly is the manager of the team and Derek Jeter is CEO and part-owner.

Growing up, Mattingly was my favorite player.

I'm still loyal to the Yankees, but bought a Marlins T-shirt last week.
Dungy's Corner
Tony Dungy is an NFL Hall of Fame coach (now retired).

On Veterans Day, The Undefeated published an interesting story by William Rhoden.

Wilbur Dungy, Tony's father, had been a member of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Tony learned this during his father's funeral.

When the younger Dungy would complain about unfair treatment from white people, the elder Dungy would say:

"Don’t worry about that. Just make sure you’re doing the right thing. And you take care of business. And if something goes wrong, do what you can do to fix it. There was at a time they didn’t want us to fly. So we had to teach ourselves."
Inclusive Corner
I liked this article from the MIT Sloan School of Management.

It features Megan Smith, a former Google executive who was U.S. CTO in the Obama Administration. She's now CEO at shift7.

Pictured: Megan Smith, photo via Twitter.

The article contends that inclusive work leads to better outcomes and details the “scout and scale” methodology developed by shift7:

"The idea is to scout out creative and passionate people solving problems in local communities and help them scale — that is, connect them with others working on similar challenges, resources, and networks."
YouTube Corner
At the Bay Area Content Marketing Meetup, Jeremy Bednarski gave a talk titled "How to Stand Out In Your 2020 Job Search: Beyond Networking."

All of our Meetups are recorded for on-demand viewing.

Watch the recording of Jeremy's talk.
Podcast Corner
I recently discovered "Next Question with Katie Couric."

In a recent episode, Couric interviewed Dr. Stephen Hoge, president of Moderna.

They spoke about COVID-19 vaccines, including the one produced by Moderna.
