IEA PVPS NEWSLETTER

Great news :  We are entering the TeraWatt area and solar has been announced recently as the “New king” of the energy sector by the IEA and IRENA. Nevertheless, 2020 has been a singular year for everybody and  for IEA-PVPS also : less events on one side, but more than 10 high quality publications on the other.

In this newsletter, you will find the list of these publications but also the list of the upcoming events where IEA-PVPS will be present.

In the name of the complete IEA PVPS team, we wish you a Happy New Year 2021 full of renewable energy.

Reports of 2020
Trends In Photovoltaic Applications 2020 - Task 1
This new 2020 edition of the IEA PVPS report Trends in Photovoltaic Applications browses 25 years of PV installations in the IEA PVPS member countries and many others. Policies to support PV deployment, industry development and the integration of PV in the power sector are analyzed in-depth.
Data Model and Data Acquisition for PV registration schemes and grid connection – Best Practice and Recommendations - Task 1 & 14
The rapid growth of Distributed Energy Resources (DER) in the grid brings up new challenges in power system management. Instead of managing a few hundred medium and large power plants in a country, in certain countries there are more than a million DER systems.
This report shows how different countries deal with the DER data collection, with a focus on PV systems. This report also provides a complete overview of all the relevant aspects that need to be addressed and foresee information that will be relevant in the future.
Life Cycle Inventories and Life Cycle Assessments of Photovoltaic Systems - Task 12
This report provides an update of the life cycle inventory data of the report of 2015. The goal  is to curate complete life cycle inventories for the most recent year of each technology available in the public domain.

Methodology Guidelines on Life Cycle Assessment of Photovoltaic 2020 - Taks 12
This report is the fourth edition of the methodology guidelines to lead a complete Life cycle Assessment (LCA) of PV electricity. The main technical characteristics and parameters have been updated.

Environmental LCA of Residential PV and Battery Storage Systems - Task 12

This report presents the results of an environmental LCA of a residential PV (10KWp) system combined with  3 battery storage sizes (5,10,20 kWh). The main conclusions are the following  :  (1) Greenhouse gas emissions of self-consumed PV electricity are between 80 and 90 g CO2 eq/kWh. (2) Greenhouse gas emissions of battery contributes between 15 and 25% to self-consumed PV electricity. (3) Greenhouse gas emissions tend to increase with increasing storage capacity

Human Health Risk Assessment Methods for PV Part 3: Module Disposal Risks - Task 12
Having analysed the fire risks (Part 1) and beakage risks (Part 2) in the previous reports, this report working on sustainability presents specifically an analysis of potential human health risks associated with non-sanitary landfill disposal for 3PV technologies, focusing on release of the highest-prioritized chemical element for each: lead (Pb) in crystalline-silicon (c-Si) PV modules, cadmium (Cd) in thin film cadmium telluride (CdTe) PV modules, and selenium (Se) in thin film copper indium selenide (CIS) PV modules.
Communication and Control for High PV Penetration under Smart Grid Environment - Task 14
Currently the integration of PV systems in the distributed systems follows a “fit and forget” rule. However, with the increasing penetration level, the intermittent and fluctuating energy availability of PV systems are introducing many challenges to existing grids.
In this report, the communication and control system architecture models to enable distributed solar PV to be integrated into the future smart grid environment were reviewed
Development of BIPV Business Cases – Guide for stakeholders - Task 15
The purpose of the report published by Task 15 is to provide a guide for design and application of business models to be used by stakeholders involved in the design process, for example existing and new businesses in the energy and construction sectors or housing and real estate companies. The guide aims at helping by highlighting the critical points of attention, allowing stakeholders to ask the relevant questions, but also by providing some ideas and answers on business model design and on how to maximize value creation and recognition.
Multifunctional Characterisation of BIPV - Task 15
This report aims to identify areas where there is still a need for international standardisation on multifunctional characterisation of BIPV modules and systems and to recommend approaches which could be taken to meet this need.
Regional solar power forecasting 2020 - Task 16

High levels of photovoltaic (PV) power penetration pose challenges to the operational performance of the power system. Regional forecasts of PV power allow transmission system operators (TSOs) and distribution system operators (DSOs) to take appropriate measures to maintain balance between supply and demand.

In this report, Task 16 compares the accuracy of several up-scaling methods for regional PV power forecast from 1 up to 3 days-ahead using three different case studies characterized by different sizes of the area of interest and located in two different countries

The International Energy Agency (IEA), founded in 1974, is an autonomous body within the framework of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). The Technology Collaboration Program (TCP) was created with a belief that the future of energy security and sustainability starts with global collaboration. The programme is made up of thousands of experts across government, academia, and industry dedicated to advancing common research and the application of specific energy technologies.
