Update from the Shama Team

Message from Our Strategic Manager Silvana

I'm so pleased to be back working at Shama. It means coming back to a great team of diverse women, who are passionate and professional, who challenge me every day in my thinking and who inspire me to do my best.

I'm also excited to be back to work with ethnic women and communities because it is making life better for our families and us. This work allows me to gain an understanding for people who are different to me in culture and life experiences; it's a real privilege; plus I get to enjoy all the great food that people bring to Shama 😉

I must say that being with family and friends in Chile this year has been amazing! COVID-19 was definitely unexpected but that doesn't make it any worse. Actually, I have learnt so much because I had to reinvent myself with the six-month lockdown. I never had so much time so we had to stop and see what we could do with the free time. Reading, watching movies, hanging out with the family, cooking, cross-stitching, reflecting, writing, filming videos with the kids, playing board games, and so much more… especially time to connect deeply with those that I was spending the quarantine with, my kids, my parents, siblings, niece and nephew.

In a typical year, with such a busy life, we wouldn't even have time to talk to each other. So... 2020 was different from what I thought it would be, but I wouldn't change it… well maybe a couple of things, but overall, definitely a year to remember, and as I read somewhere: This is not the year to get everything we want. This is the year to appreciate everything we have!

SuperSHEro - Free Confidence Workshops

Women in our communities continue to miss out on decision-making and remain unaware of our rights, while shouldering most of the work at home and childcare. Migrant and refugee women also face intensely unique stressors:
  • lack of work and social support,
  • difficulties in the migration process,
  • loss of status and identity
These factors trigger the lack of self-esteem, empowerment and motivation to give their best as new members of New Zealand society. We have met these women with incredible abilities to offer to their community. However, the lack of self-esteem often affects their mental well-being and limits their abilities to grow on a personal and professional level. Some causes such as isolation, loneliness, language skills, migration stories and/or cultural backgrounds, have hindered progress for these women to become empowered.

Shama is offering 11 workshops on self-confidence that involve a life-coach delivering a 5 hour session to build skills to unleash your inner SuperSHEro! Each workshop can stand on its own, enabling the participant to learn strategies in gaining confidence.

The sessions will be held in simple English, with plenty of interactive visual aids that are easy to understand since language can pose as a barrier to effective communication for some ethnic women.
