President’s Report November 2020
 

Hello everyone,

As the festive season approaches, I hope that the pile of books that we all have ready to read becomes a little diminished by your efforts at calm and tranquility that is the essence of personal reading.

The Committee met in early December and exchanged Christmas story books which we will return to each other on Library Lover’s Day (14th February). At our meeting Veronica Melville put her hand up to be our Minute’s Secretary. Thank you, thank you for offering to do this.

The National Board has undergone changes recently and our Branch wishes to thank Rosemary Thomas for her sterling and passionate work as an Independent Director as well as her tireless work as the Awards Convener over many years. She has always been a fabulous contributor at both local and National level. She will remain the co-ordinator of our Christmas Book giving.

Thank to you the 2020 committee for their support and determination to master Zoom this year.
We look forward to more face to face events in 2021.

FROM THE DESK
November 27, 2020

Dear members and the CBCA community,

It is an honour to write my first communication to you as the chair of your CBCA Board. The Board
has met twice. We spent the first meeting voting in the Chair (Wendy Rapee) and Vice Chair (Tania
Longman) and concentrating on the logistics of the changes. We welcomed the new member
directors from NSW (Wendy Rapee), SA (Jane Moore) and VIC (Karys McEwen).

I really look forward to developing a good working relationship within the Board and we have
already begun consulting and collaborating widely with each of your branch committees. At
the outset of the second Board meeting on November 25, I committed the Board to ensuring
our approach to decision-making includes the voices, creative ideas and drive of our dedicated
community of volunteers across the whole CBCA. Your member director will be your direct conduit
to the Board. They will relay our thinking to you and seek feedback, but I encourage you to
communicate with us in any way that suits you. Send news, suggestions for projects and activities
you feel could be scalable across the organisation, indeed anything you would like us to know. The
Board will endeavour to support your branch to further the CBCA purpose in your communities.

We determined that our two new independent directors will provide the Board with expert strategic
financial and legal skills (company secretary). We are currently shaping a call for expressions of
interest and we will circulate these to you to assist our recruitment process.

We have received an incredible number of awards entries given the tough year our publishers and
creatives have experienced, we congratulate them all. Our judges are busy assessing and working
towards their judges’ conference in February.

A Shaun Tan merchandise 2021 artwork reveal is inching closer and we will launch the range
during Term 1, 2021. We thank you for your support in 2020 and value the feedback you have
given us.

On behalf of the Board we wish you and your families a safe and healthy festive time, as we wave
off a year of uncertainty. We look forward to reconnecting in 2021.

Pinerolo is the Children’s Book Cottage in Blackheath which officially opened on 10 November 2010. The newsletter is written by Margaret Hamilton AM.

The day she stole the sun

When bushfires ripped through Cobargo in the early hours of the morning on New Year’s Eve, some lost houses, others lost family members and all have a story to tell about that day. 

Together, along with the help of their teacher Campbell Kerr, Cobargo Public’s Year Five and Six class have told their story – writing and illustrating a book titled ‘The Day She Stole the Sun.’  

The book is $22, of which $10 goes to the School.  To purchase, go to the Little Scribe website.

Judy has launched her new website, however the shop is not quite working yet - orders via email.  There is lots to see on her website.

Small Works Exhibition ON NOW

Now open at Beaver Galleries – the 2020 Small Works Exhibition featuring over 30 artists -including Judy Horacek – and an amazing variety of works. Judy has done some small watercolours. It’s a cash and carry exhibition – see something you like and you can take it with you then and there. Ideal gifts! It’s open until 5pm, 24 December.

New CBCA Instagram Account

The Communications Subcommittee recently launched a new CBCA National Instagram account @cbcaustralia (@cbca was unavailable). This, along with our Facebook and Twitter accounts, will be used to communicate our key announcements and to share interesting and relevant content with our members and followers. Just a reminder to use the hashtag #CBCA2020 when promoting any events.
