Greetings Phoenix Modern Families,

In  the last several months, our community has continued to take shape as learners have made connections with each other and reflected on their own sense of identity and belonging at Phoenix Modern.  We hosted our first exhibitions of the year and heard from children about the value of our diverse community and the role we can each play. One Hummingbird explained, “Diversity is important because it gives us a way to learn how to love and care for each other.”

Thank you for your ongoing flexibility and commitment to our learning community this year. Thank you also for the generosity of so many of you who have given time and resources. As you will see below, we have two opportunities this month to give in a big way. Please consider giving to our December goal of 100 donations by December 31 with a dollar for dollar tax credit and our Food Drive for St. Mary’s Food Bank.

We also hope to see you at our Town Hall Meeting and/or Coffee Mingler next week for some time to connect as a community.

Wishing you well,

The Phoenix Modern Team

Food Drive for St. Mary's Food Bank

From now until the end of January, Phoenix Modern will be running a food drive for St. Mary's food bank. Our goal is to donate 300 pounds of food. That's 50 pounds per studio. Please drop off your non-perishable food items at Phoenix Modern between now and January 29th.

Giving Goal for December - 100 Donations!

Thank you to all who have already contributed a public school tax credit or other donations to Phoenix Modern this month!  We have an ambitious goal of 100 donations before December 31, 2020 and are already well on our way because of many of you.

These funds are used to support our 100 learners with resources for outdoor play, social and emotional curriculum, and interactive studio experiences. Learn more about this program.

Please consider giving this month.

Insights...

A window into Exhibitions

In November, we held our first ever Virtual Exhibitions. Each Exhibition reflected the culture and community of that Studio. The Flying Phoenix's created websites to demonstrate their learnings, while the Cuttlefish ran breakout rooms and the Huskies learners created their own slideshows about their learning. Meanwhile the Meerkats, Ants, and Hummingbird guides created documentation as teacher-researchers, capturing and synthesizing moments from their studios.

Here are some reflections from the Meerkat Studio on how their studio is like a puzzle:

How are the Meerkats like a puzzle?

“We are all different.”

“Yeah, we are all unique.  We are all our own person, like a puzzle piece.”

“Lareto, the Meerkat, told us we all can work together like a puzzle."

“Yeah, Meerkats make burrows.  They help each other and work together."

“Puzzle pieces go together, like how we help each other.”

“We are all different. We are a community, like a puzzle."

“I think the Meerkats are all different puzzle pieces.  They fit together because they are a community.  We are all humans.”

“Everyone in the world has one thing in common.  We are all different.  But we are all humans.”

“I wonder where my puzzle piece will fit in…”
