Chairs message for Christmas and New Year

Well what a year this has turned out to be!
Can you remember back to the end of March when we were all told to stay at home, not go to work and to shut our businesses down?

It was a start to a very busy year for me as many will recall, so many updates to send out for restrictions, not just one set but potentially four separate sets of restrictions, guidelines and rules. We then went onto trying to make sure we were as a charter industry well represented at Government level so we could challenge some of the decisions made by DEFRA with no back up to The Maritime and Coastguard Agency or Department of Transport.  Many long emails to the government, local authorities and other marine organisations to ensure our sector was well represented.
The production of certification and signage to all through the website was I believe a great use to show we as an industry were leading the way.

It would be foolish to think everyone was well looked after and despite all my efforts many of you saw little support from the financial opportunities that existed then and are still ongoing, but I feel a difference for many was made.

Recently as the main Summer and Autumn season ended we saw further restrictions and we all expect to see more until the medical experts manage to gain control of the spread of the pandemic. I am still sending out letters and challenges of your behalf.

You will all be aware of the tragic events in Southampton in August this year on board a charter boat.  The MAIB and Police have been liaising with me and during such challenging times I have offered the PCA support to those involved as well as providing updates to the authorities .  The matters remain with the authorities. Please take a moment during the festivities  to think about all those involved. Very challenging times for everyone.

I am also very pleased to have seen a good increase in our membership this year during the pandemic and I hope this is reflected in the way the team were helping our members with advice and support.  I am also delighted to welcome a Welsh and Scottish representative to the committee . Neil and Phil's introductions were in the last newsletter.

As I look forward to the start of 2021 with a wish we can start to operate to our full capacity with no hinderance from the dreaded "C " word. I do anticipate the rise in bookings we all saw after the first lockdown during the summer months will continue due to so many staying in the UK. I hope we are all ready or almost ready.

I along with the rest of your committee wish you and your families/friends a very peaceful relaxing time over the period and look forward to a New Year with added zest.

Please look after yourselves, stay safe and we will all see each other on the water soon.

Kindest Regards Ian Winson
