Socialprotection.org e-conference on turning the COVID-19 crisis into opportunity 

Ben Davis (FAO) discussed scaling social protection for economic inclusion of the poorest during COVID-19 as well as moderating an event on fostering coherence between social protection, agriculture and natural resource management.

Natalia Winder Rossi (UNICEF) spoke an expert panel discussion on the
implications of the COVID-19 crisis for universal social protection.

Alejandro Grinspun (FAO) moderated a session on the impacts of
COVID-19 and policy responses in rural Africa.

Ashu Handa (UNC) and Tayllor Spadafora (UNICEF) presented an
interactive dashboard to simulate COVID-19 & cash transfer impacts in Africa.


At UNU-WIDER’s annual conference Silvio Daidone (FAO) presented work on
cash transfers effect on risk and time preferences while Noemi Pace presented work on risk preferences among small farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Ashu Handa (UNC) presented simulation results on the mitigating effects of cash transfers in response to COVID-19. (2-6 November)

 
Ashu Handa joined a panel on
Engaging in the UN Sustainable Development Goals in Africa, where he discussed the role of cash transfers in achieving Goal 1 on poverty reduction. (November 11)



Douglas MacKay (UNC) discussed the ethics of policy research at online conference hosted by On Think Tanks. (10 November)

SPARKS Virtual Conference on social protection and health

Essa Chanie Mussa (UNICEF Innocenti) presented a cross-sectional study on enrolment, linkages, and gaps in Ethiopian Community Based Health Insurance.

Tia Palermo (University of Buffalo) and Clement Adamba (ISSER) discussed economic strengthening and pathways to improved health.

Leah Prencipe (Erasmus MC) presented a turbo talk on the effects of cash plus on youth mental health.

Natalia Winder Rossi discussed country experiences of linking health and social sectors for improved social protection on the closing panel.

Staff

Prof. John Maluccio, currently on sabbatical from Vermont’s Middlebury College, joined FAO's Social Protection Team in September and will be working with the team until June 2021. He will provide technical support in generating quantitative evidence on the long-term impacts of social protection.

Blessing Masamha has been appointed as a
Transfer Project research fellow at FAO. His research interests are in agriculture and rural development. During his fellowship, Blessing will explore how the Harmonised Social Cash Transfer in Zimbabwe has influenced women’s decision making and economic empowerment.
