A Look Back At 2020

Your monthly update from the DYW West team.
January
British Airways Tour
We visited Elaine Lawson at British Airways Maintenance earlier this month. Elaine very kindly gave us a tour of their operation and we were able to see first hand the intricate maintenance programme their fleet goes through at their site at Glasgow Airport. We have worked closely with Elaine over the last few years as she works in the local area with schools to help inspire young people and let them get an insight into working in Engineering as well as offering young people a chance at Work Experience at their site and a potential career through their Apprenticeship Programme.

Careers Fairs
The DYW West team attended multiple careers events at schools in various regions in the month of January, including Johnstone HS, Mary Russell School, Trinity HS and Dumbarton Academy as well as the Renfrewshire Apprenticeship Careers Fair held at the Lagoon Centre in Paisley! Each school attracted a great range of employers for pupils to learn from and talk to about their industry.
February

DYW Conference
On the 23rd of February, all DYW regional groups were invited to The Studio in Glasgow for the first All Staff DYW Conference. It was great to see DYW staff members from all across the country congregate to discuss the future vision of the programme in all areas.

Career Ready Breakfast Event
We were delighted to support the Career Ready Breakfast Event at West College Scotland on February 26th. Mark McCorkindale from Diageo started us off by sharing some of his experiences before employers heard from current Career Ready Students and learned how employers could get involved. Massive thanks to the volunteers and employers who attended on the day!

March

We still managed to get some exciting stuff done in March this year before we began working from home:

Scottish Apprenticeship Week
Thank you to everyone who took part in Scottish Apprenticeship Week this year! We had a great week and were involved in lots of great events Including the Inverclyde Apprenticeship Careers Fair which had an excellent range of employers there including Diodes Inc, BBC Scotland, Scottish Leather Group & more! Check out this
photo album from the day!

International Women's Day
We celebrated International Women's Day in style once again this year as we spread it across a whole week! With a particular focus on getting young women into STEM subjects and industries, we took groups on tours of some of the largest employers in the West Region. Seeing behind the scenes at the Inverclyde Royal hospital, Royal Alexandria hospital, British Airways and Rolls-Royce will hopefully inspire young women to pick more STEM subjects and a career in a STEM-related industry!

Diodes Donate 17,000 Masks to Frontline Staff
Greenock semiconductor manufacturer Diodes donated 17,000 face masks to Inverclyde Health and Social Care Partnership to help protect front-line health and care staff in the fight against the Coronavirus.

We're determined to bring inspiring stories from industry professionals every year on the week of exam results. While it would be preferable to get the results you're looking for, you can still achieve your career goals no matter the circumstance. Visit https://www.nowrongpath.scot/ for more information.

Kickstart Scheme
In September, the UK Government introduced a new Kickstart Scheme that provides funding to employers to create new 6-month paid work placements for young people (aged 16-24) who are currently on Universal Credit.

The Kickstart Scheme aims to create new, fully funded jobs across the UK. Funding will cover:

  • 100% of the relevant National Minimum Wage for 25 hours per week (giving employers the option to top up these payments)
  • The associated employer National Insurance contributions
  • Employer minimum automatic enrolment contributions

There will be extra funding to help young people move into sustained employment after they’ve completed their 6-month placement under the Scheme.

Modules included:

  • Life at Work
  • Basic Health and Safety
  • Customer Service
  • Cyber Security
  • GDPR

On completion of each module, pupils would receive a certificate and be encouraged to include the modules on their CVs and reference them in any personal statements, applications or job interviews they may have as evidence of their knowledge and training.

Additional Funding from Scottish Government
We also received additional funding from the Scottish Government to be used by our 4 Local Authorities to resource DYW Schools coordinators. These roles will work with DYW West to maximise employer opportunities and help pupils reach a sustained positive destination.

Merry Christmas & A Happy New Year!

Thank you so much to everyone who's worked with us in 2020, it's been a year like no other we're sure you'll agree. We wouldn't be able to help young people if it wasn't for all of our partners, so we'd like to extend our thanks to our local authorities, chambers of commerce, schools, employers and of course our amazing hosts West College Scotland.

We'd like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New year from the DYW West team. Let's make 2021 bigger and better!
