Archdeacon Christopher's Farewell
A special evensong will be held this Sunday, 13 December 2020, at 5.15pm in Derby Cathedral to celebrate Archdeacon Christopher Cunliffe's service as Archdeacon of Derby and to say a formal farewell. Bishop Libby will preside and Christopher will preach.
People from around the diocese are invited to participate via the livestream on the Derby Cathedral YouTube page.
A link will also be available on the Derby Cathedral website.

All Saints, Mackworth
You are no doubt aware by now that last Thursday, 3 December 2020, All Saints church in Mackworth suffered a devastating fire. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and it may take some time for the results of that investigation to be published.
Revd Jacqueline Stober, vicar of All Saints, said the fire had been deeply distressing for the churchwardens, congregation and the communities that had done so much for the church, but she was confident that worship would continue at the site in some form: "People have worshipped in this place for a thousand years and, somehow, worship will continue here for the next thousand years."
Bishop Libby praised the fire crews for their efforts and asked for prayers for all those affected by the fire.
Please pray for Revd Jacqueline Stober, the churchwardens, PCC, congregation and local community of All Saints Mackworth.
Finally, there is some useful information from Ecclesiastical that may be of interest to churches that are looking at their own fire prevention.

Clergy Housing Emergency Repairs
If an emergency occurs outside of office hours, do not delay, instruct a diocesan approved contractor immediately and inform the property team of the problems when the office is open.
An approved contractors list has been issued to all parishes and is available on the diocesan website. In the unlikely event of an approved contractor not being available, use a reliable local contractor but do try to check that the rates they charge are comparable to those shown on the approved contractors list.
Emergency work should be done immediately and the bill sent to the property team for payment or reimbursement. In case of a plumbing leak, please ensure you know the location of the stopcock for the water main.

Announcements from the Bishop of Derby's office
The Revd Canon Peter Walley, Vicar of the benefice of Mickleover, Diocese of Derby, will also be Assistant Archdeacon for the month of December 2020 and then Acting Archdeacon of Derby for three months, January – March 2021 inclusive. In that period decisions about the shape of a longer-term appointment will be made.

The Revd Sarah Watson, Assistant Curate of the Derwent Oak BMO (including St Philip’s Church Plant) and of Spondon, Diocese of Derby, has been appointed Interim Assistant Curate (to be known as Enabling Minister) of Chaddesden St Philip with Derby St Mark, of Spondon, the parish of Derby St Andrew and St Osmund, the Derwent Oak Bishop’s Mission Order and the Journey Community BMO in the same diocese. Mrs Watson hopes to take up her new appointment in January.

The Revd Alun Rowlands, Assistant Curate (SSM - known as Associate Priest) in the benefice of Mickleover, has announced his retirement. Mr Rowlands’ last day in post will be Thursday, 4 February, with his retirement taking effect from Friday, 5 February, 2021.

Chaplaincy and Mission: Shaping Christian Presence and Ministry in Schools

Heating our churches
As we experience the winter weather, it is necessary to raise awareness with regard to “wet” heating systems and hot and cold water services.
If we have sub-zero temperatures, parishes should ensure that their heating systems have effective frost protection to prevent the systems freezing up. The operation of frost thermostats should be checked. If there is no frost thermostat on a system then the parish should perhaps take advice from their servicing/maintenance company.
Domestic hot and cold water systems serving toilets etc should be drained down if the weather turns very cold and the systems are not going to be used for some time. This would apply particularly in churches without effective heating systems.

The House of Good
The National Churches Trust has launched a ground-breaking report - 'The House of Good', which measures the extent of the social and economic value provided for the nation and local communities by the UK's church buildings.
The report quantifies the market and non-market value of the welfare and wellbeing created by church buildings. This includes the provision of food banks, mental health services, addiction support services and youth services. This very tangible value extends directly out of the faith that motivates so many Christian volunteers to work tirelessly through their church building.
The report shows just how important a role churches play in our society in addition to their spiritual and heritage value. Church buildings are key to helping tackle many of the social and financial hardships that will face some of the UK's most vulnerable communities in the coming years. It is hoped that this report will both raise awareness and spur dialogue about this important aspect of the nature of church buildings.

National Lottery Heritage Fund grant applications
The NLHF announced the phased reopening of its heritage grants programmes, for grants up to £100k with further reopening from February 2021. Phase 1 is for Resilience (adapt and recover) or Inclusion project funding. From February 2021, it will resume accepting applications for up to 5million. The details of the fund at that stage will be announced early February, and faith based or church organisations will be eligible to apply.

Christmas 2020 - Comfort and Joy
The CofE campaign for Advent and Christmas 2020 is Comfort and Joy.
Comfort and Joy holds together the hope that Christmas will bring joy and celebration after a uniquely difficult year with an acknowledgement that – for those who have lost loved ones or livelihoods, or who are potentially still not able to be together with loved ones – it may be the Church’s role, both nationally and locally, to provide consolation, rather than assume everyone will be ready to join in jubilation. We also have to anticipate there may be further spikes.

Advent Hope
During Advent, we look for the coming of Christ and of his Kingdom, and the hope that gives us.
Until 24 December 2020, Bishop Libby invites you to join her each week for an hour of prayer and reflection together based upon seasonal Bible passages and collects.
Advent Hope is open to all and is held on Monday mornings from 8am - 9am and repeated on Thursday evenings from 8pm - 9pm.

BSL Carols
Many of the nation's favourite Christmas carols are now available in British Sign Language to watch and download, and to include in services, assemblies, and concerts without additional music licences. The presenting team includes professional Deaf translators and interpreters, church leaders, and tutors.

Discipleship Training
There's still time to apply for the next run of our Certificate in Mission and Ministry course starting in mid January 2021 - or to try one module to see how you like it.
The first module is "Called to be the People of God", led by Revd Gill Turner-Callis, and explores God's call to us all and God's to you as an individual. It consists of 7 online sessions plus 3 study days (via Zoom).

The Crooked Spire
a medieval murder-mystery musical
Based on Chris Nickson’s novel about Chesterfield
Adapted by Mary Hennessy, Martin Coslett and Peter Gray.

Thu, 10 Dec - 7pm - includes BSL signing
It is set in Chesterfield during the 1360 building of St Mary’s Church spire, in the aftermath of a global pandemic. Just a short few years after the Plague ravaged the country, the spire is rising above the tower of the Parish Church.
The production includes an animation of the Windlass (now in Chesterfield Museum) which was used to build the spire in Chesterfield and is supported by choir members of St Mary and All Saints and Dronfield Parish church.
