Student STEM Experiences

GEMS: Salt Marshes & Tidepools

Dec 16 at 4PM
Audience: Middle School students
Students, hear from two OSU scientists about their research and career pathways in the final GEMS webinar of the year. Erin Peck measures how salt marshes grow and bury carbon. Jenna Sullivan-Stack studies the impacts of climate change on sea stars and other tidepool organisms. Register to join this free interaction and ask your questions LIVE.

NOTE: The Dec 16 GEMS webinar is only one of more than a dozen career-focused webinars produced over the past nine months for middle and high school audiences. Visit the Oregon Sea Grant Career Day website to find recordings of them all.
Schedule a Virtual Visit from a South Slough Educator
The Visitor Center may be closed, but the South Slough National Estuarine Research Reserve staff are all still working hard to meet the needs of local learners, from tiny toddlers to the life-long knowledge seekers and everyone in between. The Reserve education team recognizes that the challenge of pandemic teaching have changed the needs of students, teachers, and schools. We’re here to support and supplement student learning. Invite an educator for a virtual visit to your classroom, or take your students on virtual tour. Schedule a visit or email jaime.c.belanger@state.or.us for details.

King Tides: Dec 13-15 & Jan 11-13

Every winter the Oregon Coast experiences sets of extreme high tides known as "King Tides". Participate in the Oregon King Tide Photo Project, which invites community members to take pictures of areas impacted by king tides and share their photos. These photos help guide sea level rise modeling and mapping. As always, be sure to document king tide events from a safe distance. Learn more about this and other community science opportunities on the Families page of the OCSH website.

Oregon Connections & Career-Connected Learning

Oregon Connections (OrC) connects educators and students with STEM professionals. There no cost for Oregon Coast STEM Hub educators to participate.
* Educators, REGISTER HERE to gain full access to the OrC website.
* STEM Professionals, to share your expertise,
