After several months of stalled negotiations and with the end of the transition period deadline approaching, despite the intensification of talks between the EU and the UK, a final agreement between the two sides does not appear to be in sight just yet. Following the halt in the negotiations declared last Friday, talks have resumed over the weekend following a conference call between UK’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU President Ursula Von der Leyen in order to try to reach a final deal before the 31st of December deadline.
With only a few week remain for European and British negotiators to prevent the UK's departure from the EU without an agreement, the main three points of contention remain the same: fisheries, governance and ensuring a level-playing field between the EU and the UK.
The European Ombudsman worked on an inquiry concerned how the European Commission approves ‘active substances’ used in pesticides. In particular, the Ombudsman looked into the Commission´s practice of approving active substances for which the European Food Safety Authority (‘EFSA’) - the EU body in charge of the scientific safety assessment - said that it identified critical areas of concern or that it identified no safe use. The Ombudsman also revisited the Commission´s practice of approving substances for which additional data confirming their safety is needed.
The French organisation Gis Fruit is working on the animal-plant association in arboriculture. They are asking for the experience of tree growers involved in reconnecting livestock and plants. Last October the Minister of Agriculture of the Junta de Andalucía, Carmen Crespo, validated the act of voluntary adhesion to a pilot campaign for the monitoring and control of plastic waste of thirteen municipal councils of the Andalusian province of Almeria. This project aims to extend to other provinces using plastic mulching such as Huelva, Granada, Málaga or Cadiz.
As the regional minister explained, “we recycle 85% of the plastic at seven collection points in the province of Almería. We are now committed to recycling 100% ".
In the framework of the NUTRIMAN project, a thematic network on Nitrogen and Phosphorus that collects knowledge about the products, technologies, applications and practices of recovered biological fertilizers, AREFLH and CERAFEL, will organise the Workshop " The NUTRIMAN project & the new European legislation on fertilisers produced by recycling industries" on 12 January from 4:00 pm to 5:30 pm.
The CONSOLE project worked on a case study called RBAPS- The Results-based Agri-Environment Payment Scheme Pilot.
The project is implemented in 35 farms in two pilot regions in Ireland and Spain. The first step in designing the program was to select the biodiversity targets, i.e. the ecological benefit for which farmers are encouraged to manage their farmland.
The kick-off meeting of the LOWINFOOD project (Low-waste Food value chains through the demonstration of INnovative solutions to reduce FOOD loss and Waste) took place on the 2nd & 3rd of December 2020 in an online meeting, due to the Covid-19 pandemic situation. AREFLH as a partner of this project participated in the online meetings.
The UN General Assembly designated 2021 the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables (IYFV).
FAO is the lead agency for celebrating the year in collaboration with other relevant organizations and bodies of the United Nations system.
The IYFV 2021 is a unique opportunity to raise awareness on the essential role of fruits and vegetables in human nutrition, food security and health and as well in achieving UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The launch of IYFV2021 will be on Tuesday, 15 December 2020 from 13:00 to 15:30 CET through the virtual conferencing platform Zoom.
