NEWS FROM EUROPE

State of play of the Brexit negotiations

After several months of stalled negotiations and with the end of the transition period deadline approaching, despite the intensification of talks between the EU and the UK, a final agreement between the two sides does not appear to be in sight just yet. Following the halt in the negotiations declared last Friday, talks have resumed over the weekend following a conference call between UK’s Prime Minister Boris Johnson and EU President Ursula Von der Leyen in order to try to reach a final deal before the 31st of December deadline.

With only a few week remain for European and British negotiators to prevent the UK's departure from the EU without an agreement, the main three points of contention remain the same: fisheries, governance and ensuring a level-playing field between the EU and the UK.

The Ombudsman also revisited the Commission´s practice of approving substances for which additional data confirming their safety is needed.
