Welcome to our December newsletter

On behalf of everyone at The Hair and Barber Council, I would like to take this opportunity as Registrar of The Council, to wish both you and your families a very happy Christmas.

2020 has been unlike any other year in our lifetime and I think there will be very few people not pleased to see the back of this horrible year!

The pandemic has hit our industry especially hard, but with new vaccines starting to become available, I am sure 2021 will be a better year for us all.

Th
e Hair and Barber Council has been at the heart of accurate communication with our members throughout the pandemic, and we sincerely hope that we have been able to guide you through the minefield of confusion and fake news, to help you to navigate the huge challenges you faced and are continuing to face with your businesses.

We are here for you, our members, and will continue, with your support to challenge Government at the highest level.
SKCIN

The Hair and Barber Council is suggesting members during this period of uncertainty to undertake the MASCED (Melanoma and Skin Cancer Early Detection) accreditation programme. Endorsed by HABIA and worth 2 CPD points, this online training programme, developed by national skin cancer charity SKCIN, provides hair and beauty industry professionals with the tools and resources to learn how to spot the early signs of skin cancer and confidently signpost clients to seek appropriate action. With over 220,000 cases of skin cancer reported each year and a 45% growth in statistics in the last decade, action is needed, now the charity says.

As hair and beauty professionals, we see our clients on a regular basis and are therefore perfectly placed to observe changes that may occur on their skin; particularly in areas they can’t see themselves. This puts us in an invaluable position. By taking the time to learn how to identify suspicious lesions, we can detect the early signs of skin cancer and advise our client(s) to take action. This could prevent our clients from disfigurement through surgery and in the case of spotting melanoma early; could even prevent their death!

Knowledge is power and the Hair and Barber Council are working with SKCIN to harness the power of the hair and beauty industry professionals nationwide, by TRAINING EYES TO SAVE LIVES and in recognising the value we add to the communities in which we operate.

Reviewed and supported by professional dermatologists, the MASCED online training programme takes around 2 hours, it can be done in your own time, on any device and you will receive quality printed resources to assist you.

A great charity and one we are proud to support.

Renewing your membership

With the work we do on behalf of you and the industry, renewing your membership is more critical now than it has ever been before! As a not for profit organisation, all income is put toward running the organisation, working with Government to continue our campaign to finally get our industry regulated, keeping members up to date with anything and everything impacting their lives industry wise, whilst in addition providing a ‘place’ for all our members to get support and guidance.

We are the go to voice to/for Government and our APPG (All Party Parliamentary Group) is the only parliamentary representation group fighting for the hairdressing and barbering industry!

So, please do renew your membership.
The Guild of Hairdressers

We are delighted to announce that The Guild of Hairdressers, recognising the importance of the work The Hair and Barber Council does for the sector, whilst supporting us towards mandatory registration, have bought from us 100 new registrations for apprentices completing their training/apprenticeship qualification.

This means that the lucky 100 will be supporting and involved with the causes of our organisation from the outset of their professional careers.

We are delighted at this incredible decision from The Guild, and would like to thank their Board for the faith they undoubtedly have with the work we do on behalf of the industry!
