Happy Holidays! ☃️

In a prior issue, I wrote about lessons from an answering machine

Now I want to talk about Telephone -- the game of Telephone.

You have to be a certain age in order to have played this growing up.

You sit in a circle and the first person comes up with a sentence.

That person whispers it into the ear of the person next to them. This continues person-to-person until we reach the last person in the circle.

That last person repeats what s/he just heard. The original sentence is then provided. The final and original sentences are usually way off.

If the first sentence was "Susan and John went up the street to eat tacos," the final sentence might be something like:

"Susan beat John up the street and threw burritos to the wind." 🤪

In Marketing, we pass wisdom along as if it were a game of Telephone. The difference is that the original sentence might be wrong. Or, it's a sentence that becomes invalid or irrelevant as time goes on.

The Marketing game of Telephone might begin with:

"Never send emails on Monday or Friday."

-Dennis.

P.S. On a different topic, here's my hot take on social media for B2B:

P.P.S. Thanks for reading in 2020. Talk to you in 2021 👋

Around the Corner
Segments in Google Analytics

Kyle Akerman is a Chicago-based Google Analytics consultant.

His typical client has a small Marketing team who wishes to get more out of their Google Analytics.

Recently, Kyle gave a talk at the Bay Area Content Marketing Meetup about using segments in Google Analytics.

Most marketers I know use Google Analytics.

Those same marketers don't use segments or aren't taking full advantage of them.

I count myself in this bunch! 👋

Watch a recording of Kyle's talk:

It's 50 minutes long. If you want to learn about segments, I guarantee it's worth your time 😎

Training Corner
"At 5-foot-6, Caruana has a lean frame, his legs angular and toned. He also has a packed schedule for the day: a 5-mile run, an hour of tennis, half an hour of basketball and at least an hour of swimming."

Is Caruana a multi-sport athlete?

Maybe.

But what's described above is his training for chess! ♟️♞♟️

Interesting story from ESPN, "The grandmaster diet: How to lose weight while barely moving."

Amanda's Corner
It was neat to see Amanda Milligan (@millanda) on Moz's popular Whiteboard Friday video.

Amanda discusses "tangential content" -- content that's not directly tied to your products and services, but covers a related category that your audience will find interesting or useful.

My take?

Tangential content is the essence of good content marketing 🙌

I prefer it. Being like everyone else is boring.

In my latest article for CMSWire, I discuss "being different" as it applies to marketing strategy.
