Read on to find out about our coastal hazard survey, voting on the Kotuku Playground upgrade, voting in the Waikanae By-election (we are down to the last few days) and your last chance to have your say on the draft Long-term plan.

There is also plenty on to keep the kids happy this week including where you might catch Santa before Christmas!

'What matters most?' extended

Thank you to everyone who's taken the time to let us know what matters most - we've received some great responses, on and offline. You can view, like and comment on the responses at whatmattersmost.kapiticoast.govt.nz.
Because it's a busy time of year, we've decided to extend this by a few days. You now have until this Friday (18 December) to have your say. Do this online or by visiting your local library or Council service centre.
We will be consulting on the draft Long-term Plan in April 2021.

Tell us what matters most

Kotuku playground – which design is your favourite?

Help us finalise the Kotuku Park Playground revamp!

In October the community voted on two designs for Kotuku Park playground in Paraparaumu Beach.

While option 2 received the most votes, we heard that some additional features were needed, especially a full swing set for all ages. We now have two revised versions we'd like the community to vote on.

You can vote at the playground or take a moment to complete our online poll before 21 December!

A little festive cheer....

You might notice a little festive cheer popping up around the Kāpiti Coast over the coming weeks ahead of our bumper line up of summer events!

Festive flags have been put up on lamp posts in key streets across the district and there is a Christmas tree in the glass atrium of our Civic Building on Rimu Road to visit.

Our Libraries hosted festive story times for children last  weekend with carols, activities and treats delivered by our library elves, and Waikanae Pool has invited Santa to attend a special Christmas Pool Party on Sunday 20 December from 2.00pm – 4.00pm. There will be games, music, an underwater photo booth, dunk tank, prizes and more!

Performance of Turn on the Light will delight!

Don't be afraid! There's a magical and imaginative journey waiting for you when the lights go out!

Acclaimed children's theatre company, Little Dog Barking Theatre Company is joining us for a very special performance of "Turn on the Light" at 1pm this Friday at Paraparaumu Library.

This is an awesome solo performance show by the talented actor/puppeteer, Kenny King and is suitable for 2-8 year olds. See you there!

Bylaw updated to reduce Kāpiti waste

Improvements in the way Kāpiti manages and disposes of waste in our public spaces and supports waste minimisation have been made through the new Solid Waste Management and Minimisation Bylaw 2021. These improvements include changes to junk mail and event waste, and rubbish from multi-unit dwellings.

The Bylaw includes ways Council can support waste minimisation so less rubbish goes to landfill, and there is less litter and waste in our beautiful public spaces. It comes into effect on 1 January 2021.

Information request responses now available on website

You can now access responses to some official information requests that are of interest to the general public on our website.

We have published responses, dating back to June 2020, to provide further transparency to Council processes and decision-making, ensuring that information is available to all members of our community.
Personal information has been removed from responses, and responses relating to private matters will not be published.

Make Summer Unstoppable, Kāpiti!

Let’s keep doing those easy, everyday actions that will help keep everyone safe over summer in Kāpiti.

Orange Parade

We celebrated the great work of Kāpiti road safety school patrollers last week at our annual Orange Day Parade.

251 patrollers from school across the district marched with their road safety themed banners from the Coastlands Aquatic Centre to the Event Cinema at Coastlands.
To say thank you for helping to keep other students at their school safe this year, patrollers enjoyed watching movies and some McDonald’s!

Blue Bluff update

With summer holidays approaching and the call of the wild ringing out loud, we’d like to remind people the Ōtaki Gorge Road is closed at the section known as Blue Bluff – 12km in from State Highway 1.

As this dramatic aerial photo shows, recent heavy rains have had an impact on the road and it is showing increasing signs of collapse.

We're looking at a large amount of unstable, slip-prone material so please avoid the area – it’s dangerous.

What's going on under the cover at the Paraparaumu Memorial Hall?

Under its shrink wrap cover, the Paraparaumu Memorial Hall is looking like a shell of its former self.

The old ceiling has been removed, ready to be rebuilt. A lot of the external panels have been stripped off and windows are being progressively replaced.
Our contractors are making excellent progress on strengthening and refurbishing the building. We’re looking forward to bringing you a warmer, safer and more comfortable community hall.
