Call for Special Members’ Meeting

The OAWA will convene a Special General Meeting on   to consider the following motion:

“to approve an exemption to the OAWA By-Laws for the 2021 OAWA AGM only, due to the pandemic, to allow clubs who were recognized for voting at the AGM for 2020 to maintain their status for 2021 regardless of if they do not meet program participation requirements in 2021.  Club that were not recognized in 2020 but meet the program participation requirements in 2021 will be upgraded to fully voting clubs for 2021.”

Moved By:  Robert Parsons V.P. Technical
Seconded By:  Laura Jones-Summers, V.P. Administration

Rationale:  This meeting is necessary to prevent many clubs from losing their eligibility to vote at the AGM if there are few to no OAWA events in early 2021 before the 2021 AGM.  Recall that clubs must have participated in a number of OAWA Sanctioned events to qualify as a voting member, so this motion seeks to set this aside for 2021 to allow all clubs to vote who were eligible previously,

IMPORTANT:  COVID-19 Update

Note:  There are new updates on the OAWA Web Site in the COVID-19 Section.  Please go to https://www.oawa.ca/covid-19-resources  to view these updates as well as for full information on requirements to return to training.

As noted on the site and in prior Coach/Club mailings, ONLY CLUBS THAT HAVE APPLIED FOR AND RECEIVED CLEARANCE MAY RESUME TRAININGClubs Training without clearance are violating OAWA requirements and are subject to Disciplinary action and void their insurance.

Please follow the guidelines.  We appreciate that it may be frustrating to see that other groups, including other Combative clubs in your area may be offering training, contact training, etc.   However, you need to be aware we feel these groups are breaking the law and are subject to fines and shutdown.  Keep in mind that recent government action on providing shielding for liability for COVID related issues requires the operator to be operating in good faith.  Frankly, these groups aren’t.  Don’t take a chance, follow the guidance and requirements.

On the OAWA web site in the Pin COVID-19 Section, there is a list of clubs approved for return to training.  If your club is not listed there, you must contact OAWA before returning to training.

In addition, please note the following:

  1. Clubs in the Toronto and Peel regions that are currently under lockdown must discontinue training even if they have received clearance.  Please contact your local public health authority if you are unsure if this applies to you, or you think you may qualify for an exemption.
  2. For all clubs, please be aware of the requirements in your region and follow the requirements of your local public health regarding such things as limits on number of people allowed in a training space, if parents are allowed in the space, and so on.
  3. There is a list of local public health units on the OAWA web site in the Pin COVID-19 section.

If you are not sure, contact OAWA.

Post-COVID-19 Recovery

Please be aware that the staff and Board of Directors of the OAWA are working on plans for how we can help with a return to not only training but hosting of wrestling events when government regulation allows.
Like you, all of us at OAWA look forward to a time when we can return to our favourite sport.
We are developing a graduated plan for return to competitions, etc.  Stay tuned.

Update – 2020 Provincial Championships Medals

The OAWA is replacing medals provided previously for the 2020 Provincial Junior, Cadet Open and Juvenile Championships.

Please see the following letter from Jason O’Neil, OAWA President on this matter.  Click HERE.

National Coaching Certification (NCCP) Competition/Introduction Update
Please be aware that Wrestling Canada Lutte is in the process of making changes to the process for Coaches to obtain their certification under the NCCP Comp/Int. program.  This is in part due to the need for on-line courses and instruction due to COVID-19, but also incorporates changes WCL was already working on.

To ease this transition, the OAWA has developed a ‘Coaching Pathway’ for NCCP Competition Introduction Certification.

Need to know how to start or complete your NCCP Competition Introduction Training?  Click HERE.

Please note that this 'Pathway' document has been created by OAWA to help Coaches understand the NCCP Competition/Introduction process.  It does not take the place of the full Wrestling Canada Lutte NCCP Operations Manual.  In case of disagreement between the OAWA Pathway summary and the WCL Operations Manual, the WCL document should be taken to be correct.

OAWA Strategic Plan

The Strategic Plan, as presented at the 2020 AGM has been finalized.

The Plan is now available on the OAWA web site, or click HERE

OAWA Super Weekend – Update

Unfortunately, due to the limitations placed on the delivery of NCCP by Wrestling Canada Lutte as a result of the pandemic and other factors, the OAWA’s ability to offer NCCP Competition A and B workshops is limited.  There are only a few instructors in Canada able to offer the course right now in the on-line format currently required.

Because of this, we have had to postpone the virtual OAWA Super Weekend we were hoping to host.  Stay tuned for news on this when we are able to proceed.
