Adult Sunday School

New Adult Sunday Series

The following prayer is often attributed to St.Francis of Assisi but its origins are vague. The earliest English translation was printed anonymously in a Quaker periodical in 1927.

"Lord, make me an instrument of your peace; where there is hatred, let me sow love; where there is injury, pardon; where there is discord, union; where there is doubt, faith; where there is despair, hope; where there is darkness, light; and where there is sadness, joy.
"O Divine Master, grant that I may not so much seek to be consoled, as to console; to be understood, as to understand; to be loved, as to love; for it is in giving that we receive, it is in pardoning that we are pardoned, and it is in dying that we are born to eternal life." Amen.

The adult Sunday class is starting a new series, “Make Me an Instrument”. We will meet via Zoom for an introduction and logistics session on November 29.

In this curriculum, representatives and teachers from across the Episcopal church teach civil discourse as a skill we can develop and use to build healthier communities.

One of the most important points they emphasize is that, as a culture, we share many more values than we think we do. Jesus is our model: where we avoid our versions of tax collectors as personae non gratae, Jesus invited them into his home. Where we accept many of our cultural divisions as hopeless, Jesus asked the Samaritan woman -- across a cultural divide at least as wide as most of the ones in our culture -- for a drink of water.

Civil discourse is engagement in conversations intended to enhance understanding. The goal of these conversations is to be in deeper relationship and to more truly know the dignity and worth of each other. We strive for this deeper relationship so that when we go out to do our own advocacy, activism, and community engagement, we are better informed about who the “other” is without dehumanizing or demonizing them.

Please consider joining us for this timely study! It’s designed for 5 weeks but we may extend it if our discussions are full rather than cut conversations short. The link to join through ChurchNext (an Episcopal educational network) is:

The class meets Sunday mornings from 10 to 10:45 on Zoom—you can get a link for the Zoom meeting or get more info by emailing Diane Koon at diane.koon@comcast.net
