Wed 2 December 2020:
Your regular update from Reading Borough Council on our response to the COVID-19 pandemic and how you can help
A message from Reading Borough Council leader Jason Brock

Today marks the end of the national lockdown restrictions and Reading moves in to Tier 2, alongside almost every other area of the South East.

The weekly rate of confirmed cases in Reading plateaued during November and has recently started to drop, so your efforts during the lockdown are helping our town to move forward.

I know it's been really tough for people all over Reading, though, and I just wanted to convey my thanks to all who have done their bit for our community. I hope you'll all keep pulling together so that we can protect one another.

From today, the following rules apply in Tier 2:

  • Indoors, you must not socialise with anyone you do not live with or who is not in your support bubble, whether at home or in a public place.
  • Outdoors, you must not socialise in a group of more than 6 people, including in a garden or a public space – this is called the ‘rule of 6’.
  • For more details on the full restrictions, visit the dedicated Tier 2 page on our website.
This video from our Consultant in Public Health, David Munday, updates you on the latest COVID-19 infection rates in Reading as we enter Tier 2.

Council Services Update

The following Council services were closed during November under the national lockdown, but will now reopen:

  • RSL Leisure centres at South Reading, Palmer Park and Meadway will reopen for booked sessions: www.readingleisure.co.uk
  • Outdoor sports such as football

Supporting local businesses

Also reopening from today are non-essential shops, and with the run up to this Christmas being a more crucial time than ever for sales, we are encouraging people to buy local and support Reading’s economy. It is a tough time for our local businesses so please support them where you can. We are doing all we can to help them too, and are encouraging local business owners to find out if they are eligible and apply for the financial support which the Council is making available. To date we have paid out over £500,000 to over 450 businesses who have applied for the local restrictions support grant. More information about the grant schemes, including a short video message, can be found below.

Stay Well In Reading This Winter

This week’s theme of the Stay Well In Reading This Winter campaign is all about getting connected. Our COVID-19 Communication, Engagement and Outreach Officer, Nisa, wants to hear from the communities of Reading, and in particular those residents who aren’t accessing our information and services around COVID-19, where for example residents don’t speak English as their first language. We want to know how best can we help you, reach you and communicate important health and wellbeing information, so if someone you know could benefit please get in touch and let Nisa know how we can help. Email unis.nisa@reading.gov.uk or call 07815 9790 354. Nisa’s short Youtube video explains more about how we can help with this.

Supporting Reading's Businesses Approaching Christmas

With the lockdown restrictions last month followed by now entering Tier 2, this is an incredibly difficult time for local businesses. Our Youtube video above from Council Leader Jason Brock explains more about the help we are making available to local businesses

We are encouraging local business owners to find out if they are eligible and apply for the financial support which the Council is making available. The money provides a lifeline for many local firms and we want to all qualifying businesses to get the money they are entitled to as quickly as possible.

There are currently two grants available:
  • The Local Restrictions Support Grant (closed premises) is for businesses that were required to close under the recent national restrictions:
  • The Additional Restrictions Grant – a discretionary grant to support businesses who may not have had to close but whose operations will have suffered a significant impact as a result of further restrictions. A two-week window for applications opened on 30 November and runs until December 13th inclusive.
To date, over 450 businesses have applied for the local restrictions support grant and we have paid out over £500,000.

To find out more and to apply go to the COVID-19 Business Support Section of the Reading Borough Council website.

We are also encouraging our residents to buy locally this Christmas to help support our local businesses. There are many local shops and food outlets offering click and collect or takeaway/delivery services and as we move into December, many will be reopening. It is a tough time for our local businesses so please support them where you can. You can find the Christmas opening hours for major retailer and shopping centres in Reading from today until the end of December on the Living Reading website.
The One Reading Community Hub

If you need a helping hand to get through the Covid crisis, the One Reading Community Hub is here for help with urgent food and prescription needs, getting a priority supermarket delivery slot, or other issues such as debt, loneliness, stress and anxiety.

If you have received a letter advising you that you are 'Clinically Extremely Vulnerable' (CEV) then please follow the instructions in that letter. If you need some extra help, the letter will tell you how to register with the National Shielding Service System (NSSS). Your details will be passed on to us, and we will be in touch. If you are having difficulty registering with NSSS, we can help you do that.

If you have not received a CEV letter but you are struggling to cope, you can contact the Hub:

The Hub is a partnership between Reading Borough Council, Reading Voluntary Action and voluntary and community partners in the town.
