Corban Estate Arts Centre’s highly popular Summer School takes place each year in sunny January. This summer the world seems quite a different place and so taking 4 or 5 days to develop your skills is more important than ever. Summer School 2021 offers an exciting line-up of hands-on workshops for adults. Delivered by accomplished arts professionals, the programme provides great opportunity for your professional development.

10% discount for teachers, returning students or if you bring a friend!
 
Workshops include textile design, story-telling through comics, mobile phone film-making, graffiti, glass-casting, fiction writing, and traditional Māori carving.
 
Summer School 2021 is the perfect place to learn practical skills from field specialists and engage with like-minded peers, in a supportive environment dedicated to creative exploration.

Kickstart Your Creativity at Corban Estate Arts Centre 

Textiles - A Journey In Print Design
With Katie Smith


This is a well-rounded and inspiring workshop for textile enthusiasts to create their own unique fabric designs. Starting with drawing and looking at the work of other textile artists, you will then create your own special designs.

Develop a Believable Protagonist
With Anne Kennedy

In this intensive 5-day creative workshop with award-winning author and editor Anne Kennedy, you will learn how to write a well-rounded main character who lives and breathes, thinks and acts.

Smartphone Cinema Secrets
With Daniel Wagner

Smartphone Cinema has established a strong foothold in the area of visual storytelling with emerging media. In this workshop you will learn cinematic skills and how to use a variety of apps to set your mobile movie apart.

Telling Our Stories Through Comics
With Ant Sang

In this workshop with Ant Sang, you will learn all about comics, encompassing everything from storytelling to graphics. To start, you will write your own short story based on an anecdote or true story from your own life.

Introduction to Carving: 
Māori Weaponry and Waka Hoe

With Wikuki Kingi

This introductory workshop will focus on the design, construction, and carving of traditional Māori weapons or waka hoe (paddle), their historic use, form, and function, and how they are made today using both hand and power tools.

OPTIONAL ACTIVITIES

Meet and Greet Students and Tutors

All Summer Schools participants are encouraged to attend this event to meet the tutors and fellow Summer School participants. Light refreshments provided.

Tutor Showcase

Each tutor will give a brief, informal presentation about an aspect of their working practice. Refreshments including beer, wine and hors d’oeuvres provided. This is always an enjoyable, inspiring evening and not to be missed!

Artist Studio Visits

CEAC is home to 20+ artists’ onsite studios and this week we have planned a tour of several of these. Come along and meet the artists, tour their studios and talk to them about their work. NB: All visitors should meet at the main reception at 4.30pm  for a welcome where the tour of studios will begin.

Coffee Studio

The Coffee Studio will offer delicious organic coffee, tea, organic drinks, fresh lunches, snacks and blackboard menu throughout the week.

Farewell

A chance to say ‘thank you’ and ‘goodbye’ to all those tutors who are completing 4 day workshops and for participants to come together to celebrate the week. Enjoy some finger food and beverages in a convivial atmosphere.
