ADSS Cymru
Expression of Interest- Workforce

On the 22nd October 2020, Vaughan Gethin officially launched the Wales’ 10-year workforce strategy, ‘A Healthier Wales: Our Workforce Strategy for Health and Social Care’. The Strategy was developed jointly by Health Education and Improvement Wales (HEIW) and Social Care Wales (SCW), with substantial input from partners, and it sets out the vision, ambition and approaches that put wellbeing at the heart of plans for the NHS and social care workforce in Wales.

ADSS Cymru has a significant national leadership role to drive the Workforce Strategy, working with key partner organisations, reflecting not only its own priorities as an organisation but those challenges and ministerial priorities that will improve the delivery of social care and the experiences of those who need care and support.

As you are aware Jonathan Griffiths, Director of Social Services, Pembrokeshire County Council, is currently the Workforce Lead for ADSS Cymru. Due to other work commitments his term ends on the 1st December 2020 and he will take up his role as President of ADSS Cymru with effect from 1st April 2021.

We would therefore like to ask if you are interested in being a member of ADSS Cymru’s Workforce Programme Board? Please see attached Expression of Interest form with further details. If you are interested in this role, please respond accordingly to the Business Unit.

The closing date of EOI is Monday 7th December.

Our first digital national conference took place on 19/20 November, with over 400 delegates taking part across the 2 days.

The event focussed on recognising the extraordinary efforts of social workers and care workers who've continued to provide critical care and support throughout the covid pandemic; and on looking ahead to re-stabilising the sector, taking forward positive new practices and working together to build care services fit for the future.

If you'd like to provide your feedback following the event, please do so via the feedback form below and return to us via email to louise.sweeney@adss.cymru

News from Partners
Practice Solutions are supporting Social Care Wales to develop a health and wellbeing framework for the Social Care Workforce.  This project will shine a light on health and wellbeing and how it is measured. The project will consider what staff expect of their employer and, in turn, what the employer expects of staff, the priorities for good health and well-being, and what more needs to be done to improve it.

To inform this there are a number of ways that staff can engage in the next few weeks in the run up to Christmas.  As many of the workforce as possible should feed into this project and their input is vital, as this work is key to wellbeing.  The findings of this first pre-Christmas phase, will help to develop an extensive health and wellbeing survey and a staff governance framework in the new year, which crucially, will inform the new Health & Wellbeing Framework.

Here are the various ways that the social care workforce can currently get involved

1. Through our series of virtual workforce viewpoint panel events (happening now - 15 December 2020)
There are 3 virtual engagement events for each Local Authority Region as well as individual events for Domiciliary Care, Care Homes, independent providers, registered social landlords, supported living, etc
These workforce viewpoint panels will only be for 10-12 participants and will take no more than 90 minutes. Staff can register on the sessions using Eventbrite.
Please visit our Engagement events page for more information on how to book.
·
2. Through a quick online survey
Taking just a few minutes this short survey will provide crucial information on priority areas to focus on
English link here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SCWwellbeingEng
Cymraeg link here: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/SCWwellbeingCYM

3. Team briefing pack
For managers or those who wish to have a conversation with colleagues
Please visit the website link SCW - Health and Wellbeing Framework (practicesolutions-ltd.co.uk) to download an English or Welsh Pack.

4. You can send us your views directly
Staff can record a quick anonymous audio message here: https://bit.ly/CareWFAudio
Email on wellbeing@practicesolutions-ltd.co.uk
Or call 01443 742384 for further information or discussions

Your help in sharing this information widely across your teams, partner organisations and the wider social care sector would be appreciated.  From the feedback already received so far, these critical discussions are something that staff are passionate about being involved in.

Should you have any questions about this work or the opportunities to give your views, please get in touch wellbeing@practicesolutions-ltd.co.uk or contact Nicki Harrison, Project Manager on 01443 742384.

Survey for Older people, looking after family or friends

Age Cymru and Carers Trust Wales want to better understand the needs of ‘hidden’ carers. Age Cymru and Carers Trust Wales on Carers Rights Day (26 November) launched a Wales-wide survey as part of their partnership project funded by Welsh Government. The survey will help provide a better understanding of the needs of people aged 50 or over who provide unpaid support to family or friends but aren’t accessing any services, information or advice.

If you are looking after a family member, neighbour or friend and are not currently accessing any support to help you in this role, we would like to invite you to complete our online survey at
https://www.ageuk.org.uk/cymru/our-work/carers/carers-survey/

or contact age concern for a paper version which can be sent back free of charge. Or if you prefer you can talk to them about your experiences. They can also provide you with information and signposting information to support you as part of this conversation.

Supporting Care Commissioners and Procurers to Promote Social Value Models

A new report has been published which offers guidance for social care commissioners who are exploring how to promote social value models of delivery as set out in Section 16 of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014.

Written by the Wales Co-operative Centre with assistance from Cartrefi Cymru Co-operative, the report is the outcome of work commissioned by the Welsh Government in mid-2019. Deputy Minister for Health and Social Services, Julie Morgan MS has welcomed the report, saying:

“Last year we funded the Wales Co-operative Centre to explore what we mean by ‘social value’ and how we might influence commissioners and providers in developing social value models of delivery. This thought-provoking and very practical report is the result, and will I am sure be of immense value to those who are seeking to commission and deliver care and support in line with the principles of the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Act 2014.

“I would encourage you to read the report, take the time to attend the learning events on offer, and become part of the ever-expanding social value community of practice across Wales.”
