This Advent in the daily lectionary (the one used when we pray Morning or Evening prayer) the Gospel readings are from Mark. Mark is also the Gospel used on Sundays at Mass, so if we're using the lectionaries of the Episcopal Church, we hear the opening words of this Gospel twice in a week. This junction makes me think of a sermon I heard in 1994 in seminary, based on the propers of this coming Sunday, Advent 2 year B. The seminarian preacher was Mark Brown, whom I in 2014 discovered was sponsored for ordination by the very parish in Champaign where I had just accepted a call as Rector. The opening words of his sermon were something like this: "The Gospel of Matthew begins with an ancient genealogy. The Gospel of Luke begins with a formal historical introduction. The Gospel of John begins with the very origin of time itself. The Gospel of Mark begins with a man eating bugs." All four of the Gospels bring their own perspective, and Mark is the shortest; why not read it this Advent, and ask God any questions that come up?
This Week's Highlights
ERD SUNDAY
The 2nd Sunday of Advent, December 6, is the 80th anniversary of Episcopal Relief and Development, a ministry Emmmanuelites have long relied on to channel our compassion internationally and for disaster relief. Along with many other Episcopal churches, Emmanuel will welcome Rob Radtke of ERD as guest preacher. On our YouTube channel and Facebook page, using the readings for the second Sunday of Advent, he will also reflect on St. Nicholas and the work of ERD.

CHRISTMAS FLOWERS
While we won’t be decorating the church property as lavishly for Christmas as in years past, parishioners who come to any in-person Masses we might be able to offer, as well as all those who join us on video or for the Zoom carol sing on Sunday December 20, will still get to enjoy poinsettias and greenery adorning the nave. So as we do every year, we invite you to take the opportunity to donate flowers for Christmastide in memory of a loved one or in thanksgiving for a blessing. Mailed and emailed forms have already gone out, or give online at  https://emec.breezechms.com/form/christmas  by December 16th. Look also for invitations to come in to church and decorate December 21 to 23!

ADVENT CANDLE PRESENTAIONS
Watch our Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube (whichever you prefer!) this month for videos of parishioner households lighting the Emmanuel Advent wreath and praying the collect for each week. The Advent collects are among the masterpieces of our Anglican tradition and well worth your time.

ZOOM CAROL SING
Sing the songs of Christmastide just a bit early with our Emmanuel choristers, plus Mike Fisher and Chris Mason! As with all our online hymn sings, we'll be able to see each other (though muted), and music and words will be provided on the screen. Invite friends and family as we prepare for the Incarnation with familiar texts, prayers, and tunes. RSVP at the Facebook event, and on the 20th just click JOIN EVENT to go straight to the carol sing.

IN A PASTORAL EMERGENCY - If you or a family member are in the hospital or have another personal emergency, please let the clergy know; they are ready to visit or assist. If the office is closed, please leave the information (including which hospital) in one of their personal office voicemail boxes or on a home phone. Emmanuel can also arrange to have meals provided; just ask!

SCHEDULE INFORMATION -
Emmanuel's ministry staff seek health for both themselves and the parish culture by taking regular time off. MOTHER BETH is off on Fridays. DEACON CHRIS is currently working from home. MARISA CROFTS is off on Mondays. Voice mail may be left in their boxes at any time.

OFFICE HOURS -
The church office is open limited hours weekday mornings for work that cannot be done remotely. At other times our staff will continue fulfilling all their ministry responsibilities from home, including actively responding to email and phone messages.
