New Zealand's health app library updates

This newsletter looks so much better in your browser

Christmas wishes and appreciation
As we come to the end of an extraordinary year, the Health Navigator NZ team wishes to thank all our supporters for your ongoing interest and commitment to the vision of providing free, reliable, easy-to-understand health information and resources for New Zealanders. We rely on a lot of voluntary support for this important mahi, and want you to know how much we appreciate you. We would particularly like to thank our app library advisory group members for your ongoing contribution to the library and helping New Zealanders identify safe, useful and relevant health apps.

We are also grateful for the growing partnerships and collaboration across the health sector as we all work towards improving health literacy and health equity in Aotearoa. We wish you all a happy Christmas and restorative holiday break.

In this Health Navigator NZ app library newsletter, we bring you new categories of app reviews, new tools that have been added to the Health Navigator NZ website, reviews of three New Zealand-based online courses and details of enhancements to the app library.

Please let us know if there's someone else within your organisation who would benefit from receiving this newsletter or they can sign up here. We also look forward to hearing from you with suggestions and comments.

Ngā mihi,

Dr Janine Bycroft, CEO, and the app library team
Health Navigator Charitable Trust

We need your help

To be useful to consumers, the app library needs clinical reviews of apps. If you have experience of using a patient-focused app in a clinical setting or an interest in the use of health apps, please get in touch. We are looking for health professionals to help us review apps.

We’d love to hear from you. Drop us an email: sandra@healthnavigator.org.nz

New app categories

Health Navigator NZ is always working to add new categories to the app library. Recent new additions include: If there are other categories that you would like added, email sandra@healthnavigator.org.nz

New tools added

DermDiag
DermDiag is an online tool developed by DermNet to help consumers understand their skin condition. Although the tool doesn't provide clinical guidance, it intends to help consumers talk to their doctor about their skin concerns. This app is an interactive version of the textbook Differential Diagnosis in Dermatology by Dr Ashton and colleagues.  Read more about DermDiag

App library enhancements

Following a recent Health Navigator NZ advisory group meeting, work is underway on the following enhancements to the app library:

App screening tool
An app screening tool has been created to help us prioritise app review requests. The app library policy is to prioritise New Zealand-developed apps over international apps, as well as apps focused on Māori and Pasifika audiences that have been co-designed with consumers and clinicians.

App update request
Growing the app library with new apps, while keeping reviews current as apps are updated, remains a challenge for our team. To help with this, we have added a call to action on each page encouraging developers to get in touch if their app has been updated.  Also, if you have developed a health app or are in the process of developing one, please get in touch.
