General Message: Christmas Travel

Christmas | Santa Claus | Airplane | Xmas jokes, Vintage santa claus, Christmas photosAs the Christmas holidays are coming up, we would like all ISD families to be mindful when it comes to travel plans. At the moment ALL countries have an orange or red travel advisory and the OMT (Outbreak Management Team who advises the Dutch Government on COVID) has issued a negative travel advice for ALL international travel over the Christmas period and school holidays.

If you do travel, and students (from ISD secondary) need to quarantine upon return, we have to treat the absence as an unlawful leave of absence. And even though children under 12 are exempt from the quarantine rule, kindly be aware that by sending your children to school (also in Primary) you potentially bring health risks to the other students and our staff.

We understand that for international mobile families the regulation can have a great impact, however for everyone’s safety at ISD, we strongly urge you to follow the Dutch Government's advice. Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.

Info evening ISD Secondary for primary parents

On 24 November we organized our first online parent’s info evening for parents with a child in the final year of Primary. Although we definitely would have preferred to have the evening at the Colijnlaan so we could meet everyone in person, we were pleased to see so many PYP7 parents and parents from other schools online.

For anyone who was not able to join we have recorded the video of the presentation. You can find it here.

Further in our newsletter you can read more on the status of ISD Secondary's MYP authorisation process.
For all PYP 6 and 7 students who want to get an impression of how a typical day is at ISD secondary, we have created a nice video. This short movie clip which we recommend to watch with your child follows two MYP1 students on their school day.

It's that time of the year again..!

Sinterklaas celebrations at ISD

As the days get shorter and colder, Dutch children anxiously await the visit of the country’s most popular international: Sinterklaas. At ISD we celebrated this age-old popular Dutch event this week as the ‘Goedheiligman’ could of course not miss a visit to the children at the International School Delft.

On Wednesday 2 December, Sinterklaas made a surprise online visit to the students of ISD! He is working from home this season, but that didn’t keep him from reading some really beautiful poems to the classes. He always gathers his information from his ‘big book’, in which the Piets write everything they know about all children in the Netherlands.
Mr. Sander was the host of this meeting and the students could sing along with the Sinterklaas songs and asked questions to Sinterklaas. Sinterklaas told us he likes to give presents on his birthday and likes French cheese!

After every class had their moment ‘in the spotlights’ by performing a Sinterklaas song, the Piets brought a present and ‘kruidnoten’ to the classes. The students did a range of activities like arts and crafts, dancing, Pietengym and pepernoten-eating games.

In Secondary school the Sinterklaas celebration started of with a visit to the “Pakjeskasteel” (Gifts castle) of Sinterklaas in Delft. A group of MYP 2 students visited the “castle” on the Oude Delft and posted their Sinterklaas wishlist in the mailbox.

On Friday 4 December, the MYP students celebrated Sinterklaas in style. A few weeks ago, all students drew a small piece of paper with the name, wishlist and hobbies of one of the other students. They then had to create a ‘surprise’ for the person who was on their paper. A ‘surprise’ is a disguised present usually depicting a characteristic or hobby from the person you are creating it for. Like a cardboard computer for someone who is really into gaming, or a giant cardboard sushi roll for someone who loves sushi. Inside the ‘surprise’ a small present is hidden. The students also made a poem to go with the surprise. They were able to write the poem in English or Dutch. For most of the students it was the first time to participate in this tradition of Sinterklaas surprise making. It was great to see how creative the students were with their surprises. For some it was easier than others, but everyone put in effort and we spent a great afternoon unpacking surprises and gifts, listening to poems and enjoying some Dutch Sinterklaas treats.

We would like to give a big thanks to everyone who made this Sinterklaas celebration happen!

ISD SECONDARY: MYP authorization update

Contribution by Ms Minke Veeneklaas

With the launch of the ISD Secondary in January 2019, the Governing Board agreed to extend the IB programme. The PYP, which was already offered in the Primary, was extended to include the Middle Years Programme (MYP) in the new Secondary school. With this decision, the school strives to offer the aligned IB continuum of programmes, and provide an international education based on the IB philosophy. According to the IBO,  Schools wishing to offer an IB programme (PYP, MYP, DP, CP) need to successfully complete an IB authorization process. If a school is already authorized to offer one of the IB programmes but wishes to offer an additional programme(s) they must apply for authorization for the second programme. Successful completion of the authorization acts as a kite mark that a school is upholding the high standard required by the IB.’  (IBO.org)

We are proud to say that the ISD Secondary has already made good progress towards obtaining MYP authorization.

In the past months we have gone through the consultation process. We have drafted a thorough action plan, which addresses the requirements needed to meet the standards and practices of the IB. These standards and practices are categorized into the following: Philosophy of the school, Organization (leadership and structure) and Curriculum. For all of these areas, the school has developed an action plan of implementation which has included evidence in the form of curriculum documents, policies, photographic evidence and documentation of training, meetings, events etc. With the support of our IB consultant, Mary Tadros, an experienced IB educator, we have now built up a portfolio and are ready to  request a verification visit in Spring 2021.

On 24 and 25 September, we had our virtual consultation visit, which can be seen as a trial-run for the authorization visit. This visit was successful, thanks to the support of our students, parents and staff involved. The overall feedback was positive, and the areas which need further support are  focused on the future development of the curriculum and growth of the organization. For the leadership team, these areas are focus-points for setting goals and new initiatives.

The process of authorization is a good learning experience and supports the school in in its ambition to develop as a leading school with a strong inquiry-based curriculum. We are confident that the school is well on track with the authorization.

If you would have more questions about the MYP and the authorization process, do feel free to contact the Deputy Head/MYP coordinator.

ISD GIVES - December Food Drive

Unfortunately, there are still families who don't have money to buy enough food for their family. Last year, the food banks in Delft alone, distributed around 20.000 food packages to an average of 1100 persons of which half of them were children. The food packages are meant as a temporary solution until the families are financially stable again.

In the spirit of giving this Christmas season, we would love to support the fantastic work the local food banks are doing and are therefore co-ordinating a school-wide collection of (non perishable) food for the Delft food bank.(https://delft.voedselbankennederland.nl/)

We would ask all parents to check their kitchen cabinets for canned or dried food items or to buy a few extra items when doing groceries. Food items that we are collecting:
  • dried carbs: pasta, macaroni, rice, crackers, muesli
  • canned food: fruit, fish, soup, beans etc
  • drinks: coffee & tea, sweet drinks (juice boxes, milk boxes, soda etc)
  • snacks: sweet biscuits, bread toppings (peanut butter, hagelslaag, jam etc)
  • other: butter, oil, vinegar, eggs
In ISD Primary the collection will go from Monday 7 Dec - Friday 12 Dec. Your child’s class will have a collection box.

In ISD Secondary we collect by mentor class and have started collecting from Monday 30 November – 17 December.
Thank you in advance for your support of those vulnerable members of our extended community during this Christmas period.

ISD SECONDARY: Update on Hannah King after school programme

Contribution by Hannah King

Our new after-school activity program is successfully underway! The students have been enjoying exploring the activity of their choice over the last five weeks, making new friends and learning new skills.

Our Lego Technic club have been learning about programming, building their own robots with Lego and duelling them via remote control! Our Musical Theatre students have been working on the choreography for 'It's A Hard Knock Life' from the musical 'Annie' as well as learning vocal warm-ups and acting skills, which are truly skills for life.

Members of the sewing club are making the characters from 'Among Us' by hand (ready in time to give as Holiday gifts!) and our Karate kids have been learning the correct technique of punching and kicking as well as building their fitness and confidence along the way.

We still have 8 weeks of classes left, so it's not too late to sign-up for one or more of the activities! We are at school on Mondays from 2:15 pm-3:20 pm and on Wednesdays from 3:15 pm-4:20 pm. If you would like some more information, or to join in for a trial class get in touch: info@hannahkingproductions.com or head to www.hannahkingproductions.com for more information.
