Dear friends, donors, colleagues,

I want to thank you all from the bottom of my heart for all your support, both financial and emotional, to Eyes on Animals.
This past year we again achieved successes that a few years ago we were just starting to work towards.
  • Four significant Dutch egg companies have completely abandoned the conventional cruel way of catching hens and now switched to the humane EonA upright method;
  • Six slaughterhouses in Turkey have stopped slicing the throats of animals that are fully conscious and have now adopted stunning. Managers from more plants are expressing interest in doing so too in 2021;
  • The Dutch goat dairy industry has been shaken and exposed, our report was debated in the Dutch Parliament;
  • Our film on the export of Dutch cattle via EU-countries to slaughter in Lebanon and Libya (that we made with three other NGOs) was debated in the European Parliament last week by shocked parliamentarians demanding change;
  • After many years of EonA-reports and investigations, the Dutch Ministry of Agriculture forbade the export of Dutch breeding cattle to countries outside the EU where control posts were not adequate;
  • Five abattoirs in Ghana continue to stun the animals. This winter we are helping animal welfare organization WACPAW there train three more slaughterhouses in stunning and humane handling.
We are also about to host a conference with dairy farmers interested in starting a “calf-by-the-cow” logo for their dairy coming from cows that are allowed to keep their male and female calves.

We are making waves! We are changing things from within.

We implies you and us.
We implies EonA and other NGOs we work with.
We implies society and even stakeholders in the livestock industry that want these changes too.

I know that the world can sometimes look like a bleak place, and this year has been particularly confrontational and difficult, especially for those having lost loved ones, suffered themselves or lost their job. But this year has also forced society to re-think their position in nature and what kind of a world we are for each other and for animals. More than ever the industrial animal agricultural industry has been put under a magnifying glass leading to a larger group of now-informed people also wanting the changes we all want.

“Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it’s the only thing that ever has.”  - Margaret Mead

I wish you good health and happiness in the simple things we are still able to do this winter holiday - walks, winter picnics, learning a new language or drawing, playing board games, online chats with loved ones, sunshine and fresh air. Stay committed, active and optimistic!
