Up Jumped The Devil is a new Stereo DXD recording from Carmen Gomes Inc. featuring the music of blues great Robert Johnson.  It has already earned rave reviews and a perfect 5 Star rating by listeners and reviewers. By framing each of Robert Johnson’s songs with small instrumental miniatures, Carmen Gomes Inc. have created an album that sounds like an imaginary road movie.

The album uses two Josephson C700A microphones (vocal and bass) added to the central Josephson C700S as well as an ambient spaced pair of Josephson C617 microphones up high as the main source of ambience. The benefit sound wise, compared to a pure One Mic Recording, is the sound of Carmen’s voice and the double bass would not suffer when the band at certain moments raises the dynamic level.

Peter Bjørnild says “Listening one perceives Robert walking late at night, en route in the Mississippi Delta, reflecting back on his life. The low A, 27.5 Hz, from the bowed down tuned double bass representing the Mississippi night, the drums creating the sounds surrounding the night and the guitar being Robert’s mind. More than playing parts, guitarist Folker Tettero and drummer Bert Kamsteeg are playing moods. Sound Liaison actually asked Bert to play the lyrics instead of the drums, a task they knew especially he would be able to fulfill. Throughout the album Folker is in constant dialogue with Carmen’s melody line, sometimes edging her on and at other times comforting her. Folker decided to use an electric 12 string guitar on the small miniatures. The sounds he creates adds a whole new aspect to his musicianship and emphasizes his deep affinity for the blues. Carmen Gomes is at the top of her game here. Her ‘never the same way twice’ saxophone like vocal phrasing showing her jazz heritage and why jazz is in such great debt to the blues. Love in Vain in particular being a good example.”

Love You Madly – Live at Bubba’s is a 13-track, 92-minute double album featuring famed Jazz pianist Monty Alexander. Accompanying Alexander on this spirited live date are bassist Paul Berner (Lionel Hampton Orchestra), drummer Duffy Jackson (Milt Jackson, Benny Carter), and percussionist Robert Thomas, Jr. (Weather Report, Jaco Pastorius, Carlos Santana). It has been converted from the Original Analog Master Tape to DSD and DXD by 2xHD Mastering in partnership with Resonance Records.

Drawn from Alexander’s personal collection, the vigorous, imaginative performances on Love You Madly were recorded to Analog Tape at the titular Fort Lauderdale, Florida nightclub on August 6, 1982. The recording engineer was the late Mack Emerman, legendary founder of Miami’s Criteria Recording Studios, the state-of-the-art facility where the Bee Gees, Eric Clapton, the Allman Brothers Band, and Aretha Franklin, among many others, had cut some of their biggest pop hits.

Navis Classics brings us a new album of Classical Chamber Music in Stereo and Multichannel DSD and DXD.  In this interview, Sarah Kapustin and Roeland Jagers talk about the album’s origins:

Chamber music has been an important part of your lives for many years, including your time together with the renowned Rubens Quartet. The combination of violin and viola creates a surprisingly rich variety of sonorities and colors and you clearly relish playing in this formation. How did you come to the decision to take this duo to the highest level?

Over the last twelve years we have enjoyed acquainting ourselves with the small yet wonderful repertoire for our two instruments, always inserting a duo or two into our concert programs whenever possible. The COVID -19 pandemic has made us even more appreciative of our collaboration, and it sparked the wish to record some of our favorite pieces for posterity. During the lockdown we started brainstorming about which pieces would fit together well and came up with this collection of works which all feature the idea of canons and imitation and how those techniques have evolved over the past six centuries.

Grammy Nominated lutist Ronn McFarlane returns to NativeDSD with his third release - a new Stereo DSD and DXD album to follow his earlier album The Celtic Lute and the album Barley Moon with the ensemble Ayreheart. This time he performs in a duo with Carolyn Surrick.

McFarlane told us: It seemed ridiculous to even consider a recording for lute and gamba without something by John Dowland. It turned out just one of his compositions was for the two instruments – so we recorded it. If there’s Dowland, then there must be Marin Marais, one of the greatest composers for the viol who ever lived. If the gamba is going to sing a traditional Irish tune, why not a recitative and aria by Telemann? If she’s going to sing something by Telemann, why not an Ave Maria, written by Gounod and based on thematic material belonging to Bach?

If we loved it, the answer was, “Yes.”

As the pandemic increased in its fierce destruction, I sat alone, practicing. Some of us play from memory, some with the music in front of us. One night I began Amazing Grace. I had always played it in G major – there are lots of double stops easily available (playing more than one string at a time) and the instrument is super resonant in that key, but this time I tried C major. There was a kind of openness and freedom that had been hidden from me. I’ve played that piece for decades, but I had never heard it like that before. I sent a recording to Lindsey. I called Ronn. We had to include it.

Now Available in Stereo DSD 512!
Summer Serenade by Jazz Sax player Benny Carter is our Album of the Week.  This Analog Master Tape to DSD transfer is now available in Stereo DSD 512.  Just in time for this one week sale through December 11, 2020.

AllMusic describes Summer Serenade by noting "Jazz Sax legend Benny Carter has recorded so many excellent swing sessions throughout his lengthy career that it is difficult to pick out the best ones. There's too much competition. This quartet date for this 2xHD-Storyville label album matches his alto sax with pianist Kenny Drew, bassist Jesper Lundgaard and drummer Ed Thigpen for four of Carter's originals and three standards. As a bonus, Richard Boone sings the good-humored 'All That Jazz'."

"The broad, sweeping phrases of Carter's improvisations have the structural stability of compositions in their own right. Here, his approach to benefits from having been honed through the decades."
-- Jan Fritz, Jazz In Europe
