Join our next meeting and get involved
with local climate action

Low Carbon East Oxford is open to anyone who is interested in taking climate action in our local area - no matter what your background may be or how much time you're able to commit. We're simply a small, friendly group of local people who are keen to get together and take action against the climate crisis locally.

We're holding short, monthly meetings to share updates on existing projects and plan future activity, which are open to everyone - so if you're interested in finding out more about what we do and how to get involved, it's the perfect opportunity.

Our next meeting is next Thursday 10 December, 8-8.30pm - and we'd love to see you there. If you're planning to join, simply put the time in your calendar, keep this email handly, and log on using the below link:

This month at Low Carbon East Oxford

Our main activity in November has centred around Tree Week 2020, for which we've been giving out saplings to local people to plant in their gardens. We've been absolutely thrilled with the response, with around 50 trees having been distributed, helping to absorb carbon.

If you didn't manage to get your free sapling, it's worth dropping our trees group an email as there are plans afoot to rehome more saplings soon.
East Oxford bike parking consultation - have your say

Oxfordshire County Council is proposing changes to street parking on several east Oxford streets to allow for secure bike parking. This should reduce bike theft in the local area, as well as encouraging more people to cycle.

Low Carbon East Oxford strongly supports the proposal, and if you do too we'd encourage you to share your opinion before the consultation ends on 18th December 2020.

Cowley Low Traffic Neighbourhoods - another consultation!

Oxfordshire County Council are also proposing to trial Low Traffic Neighbourhoods (LTNs) in Church Cowley, Temple Cowley, and Florence Park. LTNs provide traffic filtering to make the area safer to walk and cycle through, as well as making the streets quieter and less polluted for residents.

LCEO support this proposal, and if you do too we would encourage you to share your support before the consultation closes on 18th December 2020

What else is happening in Oxford?

Beyond our own work at Low Carbon East Oxford, here's what's happening in Oxford's low carbon community:

  • The Low Carbon Hub have re-opened their Community Energy Fund for new investment, aiming to raise £1.5 million to finance the construction of Ray Valley Solar Park. They've also reduced the minumum investment to £100, so it could be a good Christmas gift idea for the climate activist in your life.
  • CAG Oxfordshire are holding a free webinar on setting up community repair cafes on 8 December - something we'd love to do at LCEO in the future!
  • Low Carbon Oxford North ran an event titled 'What's the harm in flying?. If you missed it, they now have the recording and a summary on their website.
  • Oxford City Council unanimously agreed a motion to back the aims of the upcoming Climate and Ecological Emergency Bill. CEE Bill Alliance Oxfordshire are holding an event on the Bill and what it means locally on Friday 11 December.
  • Cosy Homes Oxfordshire launched their free Plan Builder, allowing you to quickly find out the potential retrofit opportunities for your home - including your priorities and budget.
  • Share Oxford have launched a gift membership for their Library of Things, another great Christmas gift idea!

That's it for now!

That's it for this month's newsletter. If you'd like to see something included in next month's newsletter or have an idea for a campaign we could run in east Oxford, send us an email to comms@lceo.org.uk - we'd love to hear from you.

Best wishes,
The Low Carbon east Oxford Team
