Upcoming Event 1: MetrO Series 6, Kingsley
Saturday 12th December
Shepherd's Park Reserve (SE corner), Barridale Drive, Kingsley
Like the Joondalup MetrO map on November 14 this map follows part of the historic stock route that ran from Walkaway to Perth, following the North Road. The assembly area is in Shepherds Bush Park and the E-W axis of the map is now a pleasant pedestrian/cycle route known as Cattle Trail. The map includes an extension of the previous Kingsley map and the area is mostly fairly quiet suburban backstreets, almost entirely suitable for prams.
The assembly area is on Barridale Drive, adjacent to the cycle jump/pump track. Please do not use the parking bays unless you need to; leave them for picnicking/cycling families. There is verge parking on Barridale Drive and lots more on Newhaven Place. Walk around the NE corner of Shepherds Bush from Newhaven Place to the assembly area.
There is a small playground that includes tricycle trailer tracks. Dogs must be on leads in the park. There is only one toilet so arrive early to avoid a queue.
Courses: Short (2-3km), Medium (4-6km) and Long (7-8km).
Pre-enter via Eventor (entries close at 23:59pm on Friday 11th December). If you do not have an Eventor account, click on ‘Create Account’ and follow the prompts.

Event Report: MetrO 5, Cottesloe
Cottesloe proved to be a superb setting for this week’s Metro event with controls in the streets of the suburb, in various nooks and crannies, and along the beach front. One control on the groyne ended up being wave drenched due to the brisk wind giving runners a complimentary shower to avoid overheating! The event commenced at the Civic Centre where an additional mini-sprint map added to the complexity of route planning. The two controls at the end of sand paths onto the beach aimed at nudging runners into considering a beach run weren’t entirely popular and sensibly slower beach running seemed to be have been generally avoided. It was wonderful to see many newcomers turning up for the run.
First runner in for the day was Duncan Sullivan on the short course; Jo Addy’s group came first in the female category. On the Medium course, Liam Dufty cruised in to victory still looking pretty fresh, while Daisy McCauley’s running training has been paying off with her convincingly winning the female medium event. Ricky Thackray, as is often the case in his second competitive event of the day, thundered in to first place in the Long event of 24 controls and Ceri Pass was first in the female division.
Thank you very much to Sophie and Hunter Giles and Veronica Jarrett for helping set up the event and putting out controls and giving the newcomers’ briefing thus giving up their runs. Thank you to LOST for assisting running the event including Tony Simpkins and Moreen and as always orienteering was in debt to Rosalie McCauley for her IT wizardry and time and effort. Many folks kindly volunteered to collect controls including Zali and Nick Dale, Jason Simpson, Rosemary Kullman, Helen Bailey, Sophie and Hunter Giles, and Jan and Ian doing an impressively rapid control sweep.
Also a big thank you to Paul Jarrett who devised the courses and set out the controls.
Results can be found here.
Series standings to date are here.

Christmas Event 2020
Sunday 20th December
The Annual Christmas event with a twist is on again.
Come and enjoy the fun – lots of self-inflicted pain for free!
Where: Clare Copse (off Kirkwood Road), Swanbourne. Directions are in Eventor.
Start: 8.30 am.
What to bring: Bring whatever you think you may need. Don’t ask me!
Also bring breakfast or brunch for a relaxing feed with great company after the run, reminiscent of the old December AGM event. It's not far to the beach for an 'afters' swim, and most importantly coffee shops are nearby.
Hope to see you there.

MapRunF: Revisit MetrO 4, Warwick
Did you enjoy the MetrO event at Warwick? Would you like to revisit the area and try another course? If you didn't make it to the event then here's your chance to try it out.
The Warwick MetrO map is now available for you to use at a time that suits you, thanks to MapRunF, a mobile phone app (available in iOS and Android). MapRunF uses your smartphone for timing and to check that you have visited all the controls. The control points are located by GPS coordinates stored in the app – there are no markers on the ground. Your smartphone identifies when you have reached your control point with a loud beep, and the MapRunF app screen will show your time and progress.
Interested? Then go to Eventor for information on how to start using MapRunF. You can download a copy of the Warwick MetrO 2020 map if you'd prefer to run using a paper map. Note that Tony Simpkins has several leftover Warwick course maps - collect one from him at the upcoming Kingsley events.
There is a guide to using MapRunF here.
