VIDEO: What's New In WordPress 5.6?

Heads up, everyone.  A new version of WordPress - 5.6 - is coming your way in the next few days.

This is the last of the 3 major updates for 2020.

It includes a few new features and enhancements to the block editor which I demo in my video. (I hear some WP peeps are starting to drop the word "Gutenberg" to describe it since much confusion remains between it and WordPress.)

Of note, more women worked on this WP update than any other update in WP's history.

Will you need to update your site? It depends on your web host's policy so I can't give you a firm answer on that.

Block Navigation Plugin Provides Missing Context-Based Outline For The WordPress Editor

One thing that is sorely lacking in the block editor is the ability to easily move from one block to another while creating page or post content.

This is especially true when blocks such as paragraphs, videos, images and other content elements are nested inside of layout blocks like the columns and the group blocks.

The plugin adds a right sidebar which lets you navigate to and through your blocks. You can also copy, move and remove blocks right within the Block Navigation UI.

I ran across this smart plugin in an article on WP Tavern which is my daily must-read for WP news.

If you're using the block editor this plugin is a must and you'll wonder why it's not just part of WP by default.

Full Site Editing In WordPress: Lowering Barriers to Entry Or The End Of Themes?

Here are 3 words you're going to hear a lot about in 2021 if you haven't already : Full Site Editing

FSE is a huge step in the evolution of Gutenberg. It will radically alter what you think of when choosing and working with a WordPress theme.

FSE expands the block editor to let you design headers, footers, sidebars and other repeating content across your site. In other words the block editor will no longer be restricted to just the content area of any page or post.

The way I see it, who needs a theme? Ok, you'll still need a theme when FSE arrives but what will happened to the Customizer?  Stay tuned.

Talk about a game changer!
