Agenda:

  • Greetings and Introduction From Our President
  • Featured Speaker - Gene Bensen in a Hangar Flying discussion on  Human Factors and Decision Making.
  • Election of chapter officers
We're excited to have as this month's featured speaker nationally known author and lecturer Gene Bensen. Gene's passion is about helping people to be better and safer pilots. He's spent more than 40 years in the aviation industry and flown everything from cubs to jets.

Gene will be speaking to us on Human Factors. This "Hangar Flying" event, in a guided discussion format, will consist of analyzing several accidents to determine root causes. Each accident will be presented through photos and descriptions gathered from news sources as well as from official reports. After presentation of the NTSB probable cause finding, attendees will be asked to speculate on any deeper, root causes of the accident. Analysis of human factors issues will be included. Emphasis will be placed on determining how the pilot might have applied risk management tools to prevent the accident. There will also be a discussion of the aeronautical decision making principles applicable to the airport surface while taxiing.

For further information about Gene, please see his website at Gene Benson.Com and his You Tube Channel at Gene Benson - YouTube
It's 2021 Dues Time ....

Believe it not the end of the year is near, and with it your friendly local EAA Chapter (that'd be us!) is looking for your support in 2021 by submitting your annual dues payment of $25. You can do that easily by going to our website at Join Our Chapter (eaa.org) at simply add your name and e-mail address and then let PayPal do the rest (You do NOT have to have a Paypal account to do this).

This chapter has come a long way in a short time, let's keep it going! When we think back 12 months ago we were just trying to get attendance up and start planning activities. In order to keep things going the officers dug into their pockets and loaned the chapter some money to cover short term expenses. Clearly the pandemic hurt our activities as we moved our meetings to virtual only and outdoor gatherings. But in spite of the difficulties, we've grown to 50 dues paying members, hosted three small (but enjoyable) pancake breakfast events and are looking forward to resuming the fellowship that in person meetings can provide. Dues and donations are intended to used to fund our Young Eagles  and Young Eagles Club programs and  to provide a foundation for our long term goal of a permanent presence and aircraft build capability on the airport.

Sooo, this is a long winded appeal to keep up the membership by paying your 20121 dues!

By the way did you know that contributions to charitable organizations (which Chapter 234 is) can be made directly from your IRA/401K?  Money from an individual retirement account can be donated to charity. What’s more, if you've reached the age where you need to take required minimum distributions (RMDs) from your traditional IRAs, you can avoid paying taxes on them by donating that money to charity. Click here for more info or discuss with your financial advisors. If you choose to donate to EAA Chapter 234, you can do so on our website: Donate to EAA 234
Progress!

Thanks to donations from chapter members Jim Anderson, Randy McClure and Dave Meek (thank you all!) we've assembled a rudimentary flight sim setup for use in Young Eagles events and by members. We've assembled this in our office (space generously donated by Av Flight Traverse City). The point of these thank you's: amazing things can start happening when the local aviation community bands together. We're appreciative of these donations and are actively preparing for time when we can safely host Young Eagles events. We're planning for events in the May-June timeframe assuming the pandemic can allow us to do so.

For more information on the planning process or to get involved please contact our EAA Young Eagles Coordinator: Fred Danielson
Thank You to the family of Late Member Doug Barnes ....

This past year saw us lose two members, one being Doug Barnes. To honor his memory, his wife Lindy and his family have donated $2,000 to the chapter to be used for chapter activities. We'll long remember Doug (he was a hangar neighbor to me) and be thankful for knowing him. God Speed Doug!
Gone West, Our Condolences to the Family of Brian Cox ....

Our second member lost this year was Brian Cox. Brian passed unexpectedly last weekend. He was a great family man and an advocate of aviation education programs for youth. he recently joined our chapter and had brought great enthusiasm to our Young Eagles program. Working with Fred Danielson he had developed a vision for our program and was planning to implement that vision as soon as conditions permitted. Our great sorrow is that he won't be here to see the results of his efforts. To honor Brian's memory, we are committed  to implement the Brian Cox Young Eagles Club as he envisioned.

Our hearts go out to Brian's family. He'll be missed by many. God Speed Brian!
