Two new R&DTI Insight podcast episodes available now!

In episode 3 of the R&DTI Insights podcast, hear how the R&DTI supported a MedTech company’s cutting edge research. We talk to Dr Richard Lipscombe and Dr Pearl Tan from Perth-based Proteomics International Laboratories who discuss their journey with the R&D Tax Incentive including how they managed the application process, what records they kept, and what lessons they have learnt along the way.

There’s lots of tips and advice to help companies in this episode, especially those thinking of applying for the R&DTI for the first time.

Ready to hit the R&DTI ‘apply now’ button? Two new pre-registration resources are here to help

Two new pre-registration resources are now available to help companies check their eligibility before they apply to register for the Research and Development Tax Incentive.

Episode 4 of our R&DTI Insights podcast discusses key information companies need to know prior to registering for the R&DTI and claiming R&D expenditure. Guests from AusIndustry and the ATO discuss who or what is an eligible R&D entity and eligible R&D activities, what type of records should be kept, how the registration process works, and common mistakes to avoid when registering.

Additional guidance is also available with the new R&DTI pre-registration checklist on our website. Make sure your application is eligible by reading the checklist before you apply.

New three month cap for application deadline extensions

From 1 January 2021, the IISA Board's ability to grant an extension of time is subject to a cap of three months on the total extension available, unless the extension is granted to allow an applicant to wait for the outcome of a separate decision that is pending.

You must apply to register for the R&DTI within 10 months after the end of your income year that you conducted your R&D activities.

If you are considering applying for an extension to your registration deadline, visit Lodging a late application. Please note that companies are not guaranteed to be granted an extension of time when applying.

Self-assess your eligibility even when using an R&D tax consultant

Did you know that even if you engage an R&D tax consultant, you are still ultimately responsible for ensuring your claims are eligible under the R&D Tax Incentive (R&DTI) Program?

To help companies self-assess their eligibility under the program, we have created a suite of guidance materials including the recently refreshed Guide to Interpretation.

All participants including R&D Tax Consultants who deliberately claim or encourage companies to claim ineligible activities or expenditure under the R&DTI program will be held accountable and may face significant penalties. For instance see the most recent decision made by the Federal Court.

If you think you have been approached by a scheme promoter or are inadvertently involved in a tax avoidance scheme, you should contact the ATO immediately by emailing reportataxscheme@ato.gov.au or calling anonymously on 1800 060 062.

Changes to the R&DTI application form coming in July 2021

From 5 July 2021 we are launching a new portal where you can complete and lodge your R&D application for registration. You'll notice some changes to questions on the R&DTI application form.

These changes were developed in consultation with companies and stakeholders to make sure questions are clearer and more closely aligned with the legislation underpinning the R&DTI.

Read the Upcoming changes to the R&DTI application form factsheet on our website. Please note that this overview covers only the most significant changes, we will make sure to let you know about further low-impact changes to questions closer to the launch of the portal.

Outcomes from the November R&DTI Roundtables

Help us build a better website

In the coming months we'll be making changes to our website that will hopefully make it more user friendly. We're looking for people to help us test the effectiveness of these changes remotely. Testing will take approximately 15 minutes and all you need is an internet connection.

If you are an R&D company and you're interested in providing  your opinion, we'd love to hear from you: email rdti.engagement@industry.gov.au no later than 22 March 2021.
