EXTERNAL EXAMINER REPORTS

The majority of external examiner reports should now be approved by the Academic Director of Partnerships and reported to recent Joint Board of Study meetings (this may not be the case yet if you offer postgraduate courses). Please can you ensure that these approved external examiner reports are shared with students as this is a requirement of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). The reports should not contain anything that would enable students to be personally identified so please redact text as appropriate and politely remind external examiners not to do this in the future. It is also best practice to discuss key points and action plans with students routinely in your student forums/course committees.

If you have not received approved versions of your external examiner reports, please contact your Partnerships Manager.
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS FOR UEA LEARNING & TEACHING DAY

UEA's annual Learning and Teaching Day will take place virtually on 20 May 2021. We'd like to encourage partners to submit a proposed talk or poster (or other digital resource) based on this year's theme - find out more below.
Healing and Rebuilding: Teaching Practice and Learner Identity in a (Post-) Covid World

University responses to Covid-19 have shown considerable resilience in the face of immense disruption. Higher Education has had to become highly resourceful to survive immense difficulties but this has meant a heavy reliance on digital technology, and the rethinking of the use of usable physical space. Once the virus recedes, will earlier forms of human interaction reassert themselves, or will ‘Teams’ and similar tools become a new norm within education? Can such a mix of digital and physical teaching be sustained long-term, and what might be gained – and lost – if such a permanent reconfiguration occurs? What, indeed, are the broader implications for universities after Covid, including for UEA? How will such changes affect staffing, student numbers, and the daily interactions of those involved? What, in this uncertain future, will a university education be?

Submissions for presentations on these and related themes (including ideas of academic community, Covid-related mental health issues, courage and compassion in learning and teaching and post-pandemic pedagogy) are welcome.

Please submit your 100 word abstract of a proposed talk or poster (or other digital resource) online by 29 January 2021.
UEA COURSES FOR STAFF

Please contact your Partnerships Manager to confirm access before booking on to any Centre for Staff and Educational Development (CSED) courses.

Creative Learning Resources with Microsoft Sway (Virtual Classroom)
Wed 6 Jan 2021 1:00pm - 3:00pm

If you are exploring delivery formats for content, you might be interested in this alternative to PowerPoint. This versatile platform allows you to create engaging and highly visual presentations, hand-outs and digital stories - an ‘illustrated textbook’.

You can choose the visual design, embed video and audio and files created in Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Forms, and easily share Sway sites with a link. Sway works very well on mobile phones (better than slides). Some people prefer Sway to PowerPoint and to screencasting. As Sway is easy to use, you might also consider it as a format for student assessment, including for collaborative work.

Using Podcasts in Teaching, Learning and Assessment (Virtual Classroom)
Wed 27 Jan 2021 1:00pm - 3:00pm

Students generally respond positively to the greater nuance of spoken comments compared with written materials. We help you get started with podcasting as an alternative, efficient way to:
  • create learning materials
  • enhance the student experience of receiving feedback (particularly for formative purposes)
  • give students opportunities to create and edit digital media.
We outline the pedagogical potential of podcasting, give practical guidelines for producing audio feedback and give the opportunity to create audio using your own laptop, phone, or tablet. Participants need:
  • a laptop and headset including a microphone, or a phone/tablet with earbuds
  • audio recording app; for example:
    • on laptops: Audacity
    • on iPhone/iPad: e.g. Pro-audio or similar
    • on Android; e.g. Rev Voice Recorder or similar.
Teaching Academic Writing (Virtual Classroom)
Wed 3 Feb 2021 2:00pm - 4:30pm

In this interactive workshop we explore approaches to help students become independent and effective writers whatever their level of study or educational and cultural background. We share a range of practices to help foster writing self-efficacy and promote a positive sense of wellbeing. The session is led by Learning Enhancement Tutors drawing on research around academic writing and resources available for lecturers and students.

60 SECONDS WITH LAURA HOWE, PARTNERSHIPS COORDINATOR

Tell us about your role at UEA
I work as a Partnerships Coordinator in the Academic Partnerships team at UEA. I provide admin support for our partners, Brooksby Melton College, Colchester Institute, INTO UEA, and South Essex College. Another part of my role is to manage the diaries of Gavin Tash (Head of Partnerships) and Zoe Butterfint (Academic Director of Partnerships and Apprenticeships). I also provide general financial support, including raising invoices and arranging for payments to be made.

How has your role changed as a result of COVID-19?
I started in my current role in March, and only had three days in the office before we went into lockdown. It has been a little odd learning a new role whilst also working from home for the first time. I have had the opportunity to sit in on some validation events and JBoS meetings. Attending these events was great, and it was nice to put faces to names. I am hoping that when things become more normal and we are able to hold events in person, I will be able to visit our partners.

What would surprise people to know about you?
I can come across as quite shy, so it may surprise people to know that I have been travelling on my own twice. The first time I travelled alone was in America and Canada, I started in New York and finished in Vancouver. A couple of years later, I travelled around Australia and did an internship in Sydney.

What’s your favourite film of all time and why?
Probably Little Miss Sunshine, as it is a feel-good film and the ending is just brilliant. If you’ve seen it, I’m sure you’ll know what I mean! In the spirit of Christmas, I also have to give A Muppet’s Christmas Carol a mention, as it is my favourite Christmas film, and I watch it every year.

What’s your favourite place to visit?
My favourite is probably Belfast, my boyfriend’s family live there, and it’s always nice to see them.

Tell us your favourite joke
I couldn’t pick one favourite, but I do appreciate a bad Christmas cracker joke…
Who hides in the bakery at Christmas?
A mince spy
