Hello,

Welcome to Sort of Nothing Like A Book Club, the newsletter from Creative CoLab (formerly CAGED Arts).

The last few years have seen the rise of the #MeToo movement and the increased exposure of the gender pay gap. All industries have faced increased scrutiny into their treatment of women. For this edition, I am continuing my exploration into sexism in the music industry and looking at the barriers and hurdles female music professionals experience.

Read on to find out what I've discovered.

"Wondering if I'd get there quicker if I was a man" - Sexism In The Music Industry

In this piece, I take a look at some of the sexism and misogyny that female artists face in the music industry. I explore representation, ageism and how women are held to a higher standard than male artists.
"Can women conduct?": World-famous conductor Marin Alsop is taking her battle to Vienna
Focusing on conductor Marin Alsop, the first women to conduct the Last Night of the Proms in 2013, this article looks at gender inequality in classic music. It looks at the barriers and problems facing women in the industry and the ways this institutional sexism is being challenged.

Why Music Needs More Women Producers
This article looks at the lack of female producers in the music industry. In the UK about 6% of members of the Music Producers Guild are women. Containing experiences and opinions from female producers this piece looks at the reasons women are so underrepresented.

Stereotyping Instruments: Why We Still Think Some Are For Boys, Others For Girls
This piece looks at how musical instruments have been seen as masculine or feminine. It explores how these associations have existed throughout history and still affect the percentages of men and women playing these instruments today.

Women DJs Provide Us With Great Music - We Need To Make Sure Clubs Treat Them Fairly
Looking at DJing, nightlife and club culture, this piece examines how women DJs are treated. It highlights the 5 ways women DJs experience sexism: Being treated as less competent, being tokenized, experiencing microaggressions, receiving disrespect and violence and not getting paid equally.

Why Don't Men Listen To Female Artists?
According to data from Spotify, in a sample of five million subscribers, male users listened to 94.2% male artists, 3.3% female artists and 2.5% mixed groups. This article looks at the possible reason behind this exploring toxic masculinity, the discrediting of female artists and how our listening patterns reflect societies systemic issue with sexism.

And Lastly...

As many women speak up about the mistreatment they have experienced in the music industry, we need to listen to what they say and try to make changes.

I highly recommend listening to Madonna's powerful speech when accepting the award for Billboard Woman of the Year in 2016 for an open and honest account of what the industry is like for women.

If you have any thoughts you'd like to share about anything we've touched upon in this issue we'd love for you to get in touch.
Bye!
