Dear friends,
Today is a very special Sunday - Advent Sunday - the start of the church's liturgical year, and the start of our great journey through the wonderful season of Advent, to Christmas. The liturgical year doesn't begin with Christmas Day, doesn't begin with the birth of Christ, but it begins here, in the deepest night before dawn, where we wait, wait for the coming of new birth, of new beginnings, new hope, of light. In Advent we're reminded that there is light in the darkness, that the new dawn is coming, hope that lends strength to suffering, hope that adds expectation to the waiting.
This year is unlike other years in ways we all know, and we shall surely experience these weeks of Advent more keenly this year. Yet this year, like all other years, we remind ourselves of Christ's birth among us, that our world is saturated by the presence of God....as we watch and wait through this season of Advent, as we work through confusions and struggles and relationships and changing arrangements, as we yearn for the light and wait for the unknown, and as we come soon to celebrate together however we may... God with us.
We shall no doubt share a different celebration of Christmas in many ways, as a church, as a community, in our family, as individuals. And we will journey through Advent differently too. But we can join still in word, in song, in taste, in ritual, in relationship, in waiting, in celebration....and below in this e-newsletter, are a few opportunities through St Mary's which we hope will help you find rich blessings, comfort and joy as we journey through this season together. Please do pass on news and invitation to St Mary's Online Advent Calendar (starts on Tuesday), the Christmas Tree Festival (and if you'd like to help steward...please get in touch), and the lovely Knitivity Trail, to all you can. with love and prayers and advent blessings, Rev Sarah
Please forward this newsletter to any who you think might be interested, and ask them to email us if they'd like to receive St Mary's e-news regularly.
